The Michigan State Police Lakeview Post are searching for a man who caused a traffic accident in a construction zone, while attempting to flee police.
The incident occurred in Montcalm County on Thursday, May 24, 2012 just after midnight. A Trooper assigned to the Lakeview Post attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in Northwest Montcalm County. The male suspect driver immediately attempted to flee the initial pursuing Trooper. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle turned north onto US131 in the northbound lane. The area is under construction and is a one-lane road. The suspect vehicle struck a third party vehicle causing that vehicle to roll several times.
The initial pursuing Trooper stopped to render first aid to the victim in the third party vehicle, and assisting Troopers and officers from the Howard City Police Department continued the pursuit. After striking the third party vehicle, the suspect then turned off the headlights of his vehicle and exited the freeway. Pursuing officers then lost sight of the vehicle.
The initial pursuing Trooper was able to identify the driver as Alan Steven Phelps, of Morley, MI. Phelps has several felony warrants for his arrest, with additional warrants forthcoming.
Information was received later that night, around 9 p.m., on May 24, that Phelps was in the area of 4 mile and Northland Dr in southern Mecosta Co. An extensive search was conducted utilizing State Police aviation and K9 units. But Phelps was not located during the search.
As of Thursday, May 31, Phelps was still missing. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Phelps is asked to call 911 immediately.
