William Kent age 80 of Howard City passed away November 7, 2020 at Spectrum Health Butterworth campus. He was born September 17, 1927 in Solon Township, Michigan the son of Charles and Dorothy Wiseman Kent. During his working years he worked at General Motors for 30 years. William was a handyman, enjoyed golfing, fishing, dogs, and working in the yard. He served his country in the north US Navy. Surviving are his children, Kathy Kent of Howard City, Evelyn VanHauen of Howard City, Dennis and Fran Kent of Grand Rapids, Denise and Keith Rohloff of Lakeview; a stepson, Vincent Berry of Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Lena Swanson of Sand lake; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Nugent; a stepson, Ted Swanson; sons-in-law, George VanHauen and Jerry Nugent. Services will be held in the spring at the Polkton Township cemetery in Coopersville Michigan.

Meranda Lynn Baguss, 33 of Sand Lake, died Friday, September 15, 2017 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Meranda was born August 17, 1984 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Cedar Springs High School in 2003 and was attending Montcalm Community College. She had worked at Spectrum Health Butterworth on 7-South for 10 years. She was a beautiful mother, very kind hearted and always put others ahead of herself. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her twin sons, Tony Lee Anthony III, Chauncey James Anthony; significant other, Tony Lee Anthony II; mother, Jamie Fischer; sisters, Kimberly Brassel, Jenna Worthy; grandfather, Jerry Baguss; aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Gay Baguss. The family will greet friends today, Thursday, September 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where the time will conclude with a service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to a gofundme for expenses at https://www.gofundme.com/jn5a88-meranda-baguss-tony-chauncey

Rockford apartment explosion caused by resident


The Rockford Department of Public Safety reports that an explosion that occurred at the Harvest Hill apartments, 100 Childsdale NE, last Friday, November 26, was caused by a resident cooking marijuana butter.

Police said that butane lighter fluid used in the cooking process was ignited when the resident lit a cigarette while cooking the marijuana butter in the bathroom.

The injured resident is at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus recovering from burns he received in the explosion. Rockford investigators declined to name the resident, pending the outcome of their criminal investigation into the explosion.

Inspectors felt at the time of the explosion that there might be significant damage to the building, which has eight separate units. Rockford DPS investigators met with structural engineers on Monday, November 30, and determined that the structure was safe. Residents, who had been displaced since Friday, were notified they could return home.

Police said that damage estimates for the property are not available.

Arthur Cazier age 81, of Grant, passed away September 18, 2015 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.  He was born January 17, 1934 in Grand Rapids the son of Cecil and Myrtle (Elliott) Cazier.  During his working years he worked at McInerny Spring and Wire for 38 Years before retiring from there.  He loved fishing, hunting and playing his harmonica which Art played at many locations.  Surviving is his sister, Bessie Smith of Marne. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 2011, and five brothers, Russ, Rex, Glen, Wes, and Jerry; and two sisters, Doris and Iva. Memorial services will take place on October 14 at the Cedar Springs American Legion Post from Noon till 4 pm.
