Slippery roads contributed to crashes all over Kent County on Wednesday, January 3. There were a multitude of slide offs, rollovers, and crashes on both the highways and local roads.
One of the crashes occurred in the City of Cedar Springs. The Kent County Sheriff Department responded to a property damage crash at W. Muskegon and 6th shortly before 10 a.m. Sgt. Jason Kelley reported that a westbound pick-up truck lost control, crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound pick-up truck. No injuries were reported. The driver of the westbound vehicle was cited for violation of basic speed law—driving too fast.

Two people were killed in an accident on Northland Drive just north of 15 Mile Tuesday.
Slippery roads may have played a part in the deaths of two people involved in a crash on Northland Drive near 15 Mile Road Tuesday.
According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, a 1963 Ford Fairlane was headed north on Northland Drive about 4:12 p.m. Tuesday, when it crossed the centerline just north of 15 Mile Road, and was struck by a southbound Ford F150 truck.
The driver of the Ford Fairlane, Duane Schwartz, 68, of Sand Lake, and his passenger, Cathy Sutton, 57, of Gaines Township, were both ejected from the car and died of their injuries at the scene. The Ford Fairlane was not equipped with seatbelts.
The driver of the Ford F150, Renee Regan, 51, of Kentwood, was not injured in the crash.

Traffic was diverted for several hours Tuesday after a fatal crash on Northland Drive near 15 Mile Road.
Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. The accident is still under investigation.
Northland Drive was shut down between 15 Mile and 16 Mile, and then later 15 Mile and Indian Lakes for several hours.
Assisting at the scene was Courtland Fire and Rescue, Cedar Springs Fire and Rescue, Rockford Ambulance, and the Kent County Road Commission.

This Montcalm County Sheriff vehicle was struck by another vehicle while parked alongside US131.
The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office is advising motorists to slow down on slippery roads after a vehicle ran into one of their cruisers at the scene of an accident.
While investigating a traffic crash on US131 near the Kendaville Road overpass on Saturday, November 21, a Montcalm County Sheriff’s cruiser was struck. The crash occurred at approximately 9:52 p.m.
The deputy had his cruiser parked along the road edge with the emergency lights activated, while policing the initial crash. A northbound Ford F250 lost control and crashed into the cruiser. The cruiser was unoccupied at the time and there were no injuries.
The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers that winter driving season is upon us all. “Drivers are required to slow down and drive more cautiously during inclement weather to avoid being involved in a crash,” said Undersheriff Michael J. Williams. “Slowing down, leaving more space between vehicles, leaving for one’s destination earlier, and keeping one’s vehicle windows clear of frost are some suggestions to drivers to help make trips safer. Road conditions can also change without warning and drivers need to be able to react accordingly.”
