Social Studies Teacher Mr. Dove Explores the World Through Travel Programs

New Beginnings teacher Shayne Dove has found an exciting way to make the most of his summers. Through various educational fellowships and grants, Mr. Dove has been able to travel throughout the United States and internationally- mostly at no cost to him. After long hours of writing essays, filling out applications, and consoling himself over rejection emails, Mr. Dove has been accepted to seven travel programs over the past four years. All of the programs have an educational focus, ranging from studying the history, culture, and education systems of different countries to promoting environmental conversation and wilderness education.

According to Mr. Dove, “These programs provide me with first-hand experience with topics I teach and allow me to collect primary source materials. As a result, my content knowledge is strengthened, I am able to make concepts more relevant and meaningful for students, and my passion for teaching and learning is reinforced.” Mr. Dove credits social studies teacher, education wizard, and all-around life expert Dave Stuart for encouraging him to apply for his first educational travel experience- a two week program in Germany. Since visiting Germany, Mr. Dove has participated in fellowships in Japan, Virginia, and Philadelphia. His future plans include programs in Boston and Wyoming this summer, Washington D.C. in the fall, and South Africa next summer. Using the fellowships as a starting point, Mr. Dove has also created his own educational experiences in Italy, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and all over the United States.

If you are interested in learning more about travel programs or would like help applying to one, Mr. Dove would love to help.
