Original Play at the Kent Theatre

CS Historical Society’s Memorial Cemetery Walk

May 27: The Cedar Springs Historical Society is holding its 18th annual Memorial Cemetery Walk on Sunday, May 27th, at 2 pm to honor veterans of all wars. This years’ veterans will be Alfred Sliter, Civil War; Samuel Armstrong, Spanish/Philippine American War; Russell VanDore, World War I; Mark Wheeler, World War II; Don Miles, Korean War; Carl Straub, Vietnam War. Biographical and historical information will be presented at each gravesite. The Glen Hill Post of the American Legion honor guard will assist at the presentation. We will leave from the museum in Morley Park at 1:30 and return there for refreshments. In case of severe weather warnings we will cancel the event. In case of rain we will do the presentations in the museum. #20,21b

FREE Movie at Kent Theatre

May 29,30: En Gedi will present a FREE movie at the Kent Theatre, God’s Not Dead 2, on Tuesday, May 29th and Wednesday, May 30th both at 6:30 pm. The Christ-centered movie tells a story about high school history teacher Grace Wesley (Melissa Joan Hart) who is asked a question about Jesus in class, her response lands her in deep trouble. The ensuing epic court case could expel God from the classroom and the public square once and for all. God’s Not Dead 2 is a powerful call to action. #20,21b

Senior Lunch at Pine Grove Community Church

May 30: Pine Grove Senior Café would be honored for All Seniors age 60 and over to come celebrate our Veterans both those who are still here with us and those who have given the utmost; those who live on in our memory.  We would be honored to share a meal and memories with you as our guest.  We ask our guests who are Veterans to wear your colors.  Guests who wish to display memorabilia may do so.  At Noon Wednesday May the 30th in our Family Life Center on the North West corner of M-82 & Beech. #21

Reader’s Theatre at CS Library

May 31: Join the FUN with Actors del Arte Ensemble for their FREE popular Reader’s Theatre, Thursday, May 31st at 7 pm to be held in the Cedar Springs Library’s Community Room. The Actors will, present “Blade Runner” by Phillip Dick, based on his 1968 book, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” a work of science fiction. Two of his other books were made into major motion pictures. #21

Classic Car Hop

June 1: Rockford Springs Community Church, 5815 – 14 Mile Rd. (about 2.5 miles east of US131) will host a Classic Car Hop on Friday, June 1st (Rain date is June 8), from 5:30 – 7:30pm. Cruise on over! Load up the family truck, van & grocery getter with your family friends and neighbors! Red Flannel Queen Pageant

June 10: Attention all young ladies living in, or attending school within, the Cedar Springs School District, including homeschoolers, who will be in the 11th grade in the 2018-19 school year. There will be a MANDATORY parent meeting for any young lady who would like to participate in the 2018 Red Flannel Pageant and her parent(s). Youth Soccer Challenge

Sept. 3: Calling all kids! The Sand Lake Knights of Columbus will be hosting a competitive soccer event on Saturday, September 3rd at 9 am at the Sand Lake Soccer Fields. All community youth are welcome to compete in the free opportunity to test their skills at a penalty kick competition. Each participant will be given 15 penalty kicks and points will be awarded depending on the area of the scoring zones through which the ball passes. All boys and girls up to age 17 (as of Sept. 1) are eligible to participate. Competition is divided into four age brackets and the top scoring girl and boy of each bracket will be awarded. All contestants will be recognized for their participation Registration begins at 8:30 am at the fields. Written parental consent is required. MCC Offers Trip to Stratford

Oct. 14: Montcalm Community College offers a one-day cultural trip to Stratford, Ontario, Canada, on Oct. 14, to see Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Non-students may register for the trip starting September 1st, and the cost is $65. Anyone planning to participate in this trip must be age 12 or older, and have an enhanced driver’s license, United States Passport or Passport Card that is valid through October 2016. Participants ages 12 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Cedar Springs Museum’s Summer Car Show

July 30: Be sure to join the fun at the Cedar Springs Summer Car Show in Morley Park on Saturday, July 30 from 8:00am-2:00pm. Free to all visitors and only $10.00 to register a car. A grilled hotdog lunch will be served “free” to the public from 11:00am to 1:00pm. We will have Pat Patin as DJ. Trophies will be given out at 1:00pm to “Best of Show” and the “Top 19” favorites. The F.F.A. students will sell a light breakfast at 8:00a.m. The museum uses this car show to help bring programs to our community and especially to allow us to host family programs without charge. #29

Aug. 2: The Sand Lake Police Department will present S.H.A.R.P. Sexual Harassment, Assault and Rape Prevention for Women on Tuesday, August 2nd at 6 pm. This female self defense program covers countermeasures for everything from school or work harassment to sexual battery. The course is offered by nationally certified instructor Dr. Scott Shaw. Alpha Family Center Annual LifeWalk

June 18: Cedar Springs Alpha Family Center will host its annual LifeWalk Events on Saturday, June 18th at Morley Park in Cedar Street. 5K LifeRun at 8:30 am, Kid’s FunRun at 9:15 am and LifeWalk at 10:00 am, and Baby Bottle Blessing change drive now thru June 19th. LifeWalk is a great time for families which includes a coloring contest for ages 3-10 (deadline to enter is June 1st ), a clown, face painting, balloons, refreshments, door prizes and the chance for everyone to help local families in a very real way. “Spring Into the Past”

Auditions for “Young Frankenstein”

May 1-3: The Flat River Community Players will hold auditions for the musical “Young Frankenstein” on Sunday, May 1st from 1 to 3 pm and Monday, May 2nd and Tuesday, May 3rd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Greenville. Director Amanda Hall and music director pending are looking to cast 3 adult women and 7 adult men and a mixed chorus: all of varying ages late teen/20’s through 60-70’s. Auditioners should bring a prepared solo, Broadway song preferred, with either sheet music or recorded accompaniment, no a capella, please. Five performances are scheduled for July 8 – 16. Questions? Hunter Safety at HCNC

May 10,12,14: Join Deputy Scott Cook and Director David Kieft for 3 separate days to receive your hunters safety certificate. Sand Lake artist to speak at senior lunch

Is the winter weather making you feel trapped in your home? You now have a reason to get out and socialize with your neighbors. Senior Citizen/Retirees are getting together on the third Thursday of every month for a luncheon through the organization of the Cedar Springs Area Parks and Recreation Department. These luncheons begin in the fall and rotate each month to one of the partner orgnaizations of the department. The department features partnerships with Algoma, Courtland, Nelson and Solon townships, the City of Cedar Springs and the Cedar Springs Public School District.
The January luncheon will take place at the Algoma Township hall on Thursday, January 20, at 11:30 a.m. The cost is only $5 per person and includes a catered lunch and guest speaker. The guest speaker for January is David Huang. David is a Sand Lake resident who has competed in Art Prize 2009 and 2010. In the 2010 year he was featured in the entrance to the Grand Rapids Public Museum and received enough votes to put him in the top 25 of all the pieces.
If you are interested in registering for this program, reservations can be made by calling the Cedar Springs Area Parks and Recreation Department at 616-696-7320. Reservations must be received by the end of the day Monday, January 17.  For any other questions, please call the department or email director@csaparksandrec.com.
