Man arrested in sex sting

Herman H. Kamphuis

A Nelson Township man was arrested by federal investigators last week after he traveled to Ohio to allegedly have sex with two pre-teen girls.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the complaint, Herman H. Kamphuis, 43, began talking to an undercover officer in a “parenting” Internet chatroom on February 2. The undercover agent was posing as the father of two girls, ages 6 and 11. The suspect allegedly turned the chat sexual, and asked about the features of the two girls. When the detective asked him what he was looking for, the suspect said he was looking to make a 25-year fantasy come true by having sex with the girls.

According to the affidavit, the suspect had several explicit follow-up chats with the detective, and arranged to travel to Columbus, Ohio on March 9 for a rendezvous with the detective and his “daughters.” The detective and the Franklin County Internet Crimes Against Children task force set up surveillance, and when Kamphuis arrived for the meeting, task force officers arrested him. He allegedly admitted to officers that he traveled to Columbus to have sex with the 11-year-old, and that he had brought his computer, which had over 100 files of child pornography involving children under 13.

According to United States Attorney Carter M. Stewart, of the Southern District of Ohio, Kamphuis appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Terence P. Kemp, who ordered him held without bond. He is being charged with attempted sexual exploitation of a minor for unlawful sexual activity, which is punishable by at least 10 years and up to life in prison.
