The JV Red Hawk girls traveled to Comstock Park on Tuesday January 25th. The Red Hawks came out scoring and took and early lead but the first quarter ended with the Red Hawks behind 7-10. The girls played hard in the second quarter trying to take the lead but went to the locker room behind 20-15.
Cedar Springs came out in the third quarter scoring 12 points to come within 2 points and end the quarter behind 29-27. Still playing hard, the Red Hawks tied the game at 31 points early in the fourth quarter but good free throw shooting by Comstock Park put the game out of reach and the JV Red Hawks lost 43-33.
Scoring for the Red Hawks were Allie Veltkamp, Jeanette Sukstas, Abby VanDusen, Sommer VanDyke, Tamar Clark and Shaelyn Fasel.
The girls next played a rare Friday night of basketball for the JV girls when they hosted the Belding Redskins on January 28th.
The lady Red Hawks started out strong and took the lead early outscoring Belding 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Red Hawks girls scored 12 points in the second to extend their lead and go into halftime leading 23-16.
The third quarter was slow for the Red Hawks as they only scored 6 points but held unto the lead with a score of 29-24. Belding came on strong in the fourth scoring 15 points and tying the game late in the fourth quarter 39-39. Allie Veltkamp was fouled with just seconds left in the game and hit two free throws to secure the victory for the JV Red Hawks 41-39.
Sommer VanDyke led the scoring for the lady Red Hawks with Jeanette Sukstas, Allie Veltkamp, Shaelyn Fasel and Tamar Clark also scoring for Cedar Springs.
Allie Veltkamp went 4 of 4 from the free throw line and Jeanette Sukstas had a double digit total of rebounds. Mercedes Gonzales, Sirena Johnson and Molly Caniff came off the bench with good playing time to help with the Red Hawk victory.
The JV Red Hawk girls will travel Sparta on Thursday February 3.
