JV boys compete well at Kent Ottawa meet

The JV boys cross country team had a chance to compete against varsity teams at the Kent Ottawa County Meet held at the Calvin College Gainey Athletic Complex on October 17. The boys competed well against some of the best varsity programs in the area, coming away with a 4th place finish out of seven competing teams.

Freshman Zach Reed (18th) had the race of the day, coming away with a 21 second PR (personal record) of 18:24 and a top finish for the team, closely followed by Gabe Minnich (21st) with his lifetime best performance as well at 18:27. Espen Wood (24th) returned after a tough couple of weeks resting an injury finishing in 18:35.  Justin Voskuil (27th, 18:42), Jack Sherburn (28th, 18:44), and Caleb Menefee (30th, 18:58) rounded out the top five for Cedar Springs. Alex Cole (34th) ran an excellent race with a 13 second PR as well finishing at 19:13.  Luke Price (62nd) had a great kick coming out of the woods and an epic dive into the finish line to cap it off for the Cedar Springs team in a time of 22:27.

“Pretty fun opportunity to get our dominant JV team some experience against some varsity competition,” said Coach Justin Jones. “Any time our JV team is finishing in the middle of the pack at the county championships, I’ll walk away a happy coach. The future is bright here; expect to see some strong, pack driven teams representing our town and program over the next few years,” he added.

The team enters into championship season with the varsity competing in pre-regionals held at Cedar Springs on Saturday, October 24, while the JV team will be traveling to Benzie Central for the Go Out On Top Invitational.  Good luck Red Hawks!
