IONE D. JOHNSON

July 23, 1931 – October 22, 2020

While raising her family in Sand Lake, Ione was a member of the V.F.W., local chapter, and remained a member long after moving away. She was also a member of the P.T.A. during that time. Her first job as a teen was working the soda fountain at Woolworth’s in Grand Rapids, and later managed fine dining restaurants and several business offices, among other office positions in addition to other jobs. Ione enjoyed travelling across the U.S.A. and Europe, visiting Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, Austria, Greece, and kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland. She also spent several months in El Salvadore, and visited Vermont every year for 43 years, living there for a short time. She loved music and dancing, and could be found on a dance floor kicking up her heels with friends, or singing around the house. She loved taking long car rides, and spent many summers packing the old Coleman cooler with lunch, and kids into the car to cool off at Bass Lake and later Long Lake. Ione was predeceased by a sister, Jane (Day) Sturgeon; brothers David Day, Claud Fisher, and Elmore (Larry) Westgate; honorary sister, Bonnie Whitcomb, and sisters-in-law Vivienne Preston, Joyce Schoenberger and Beverly Fryman. Ione is survived by her children, Keith (Janet) Johnson of Grand Rapids, Kimberly Townsend of Swanton, VT, Kathleen (Charles) Turnbaugh of Moretown, VT, Karalyn (Gary) Buffenbarger of Waynesfield, OH, and Kraig (Kelly) Johnson of Hesperia, MI; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law Gerry Lee Moore and brother-in-law Bryan Johnson; lifelong friend Alice Sluijer; several neices, nephews and cousins. Ione will be cremated, then buried alongside her mother, Ione Fisher Westgate at a later date.
