Red Hawks win baseball opener at Cornerstone

The varsity Red Hawks were finally able to thwart Mother Nature and get outside to play a baseball game before spring break. They took on the Wolves of Wyoming last Wednesday under the lights at Cornerstone University.

Coaches Glyshaw, Reed and Williams decided to get as many pitchers on the mound as possible in this game, throwing a different pitcher each inning. “We had a few rough innings defensively, committing 5 total errors, but we learned some things about our boys. We definitely have some things to work on,” said new varsity coach Justin Glyshaw. “I was most impressed with the play of our catchers. Logan Kobayashi played a great defensive game as did Dylan Williams, who threw out two runners.”

The boys managed 12 hits in the seven-inning contest. Thomas Reed started off the season with a bang, hitting a triple on the first pitch of the season. Cleanup hitter Payton Newman followed with another triple later in the first inning, and was driven in by a shot up the middle from Bryce Marvel. Despite another triple in the second inning from Nathan Male, the Hawks weren’t able to push another run across the plate until the fifth, when a double by Newman, followed by another single by Marvel, would drive in three more runs.

In the 6th, an RBI from both Thomas and Trevor Reed drove in Male and Jarrett Hoogerhyde to tie the game at 7-7. Sophomore Bryce Marvel (1-0) looked great on the mound as he shut the Wolves down in the top of the 7th.

When the Red Hawks came up in the bottom of the 7th, Marvel led off with a single to left. Nathan Draper was hit by a pitch, which put runners at first and second with no outs. Senior Jarrett Hoogerhyde came to the plate next. He swung and missed on the first pitch but drove the second fastball into the left-center gap, scoring Marvel and winning the game. His walk-off double leaves the Red Hawks with a 1-0 record as they head into break.

The next varsity game will be home against Grant on April 9.
