Volleyball holds Pink game


Red Hawk Volleyball players honor those wpho have battled cancer.

Cedar Springs Varsity Volleyball hosted Forest Hills Northern for their annual Volley for the Cure Pink game on Monday, September 30. The Red Hawks took their 3rd conference loss to the state honorable mention Huskies 0-3 (15-25, 9-25, 16-25). Despite the tough match loss, the success of the community outreach of the evening was not to be overshadowed. The Cedar Springs Athletic boosters reported a “great job by our Volleyball program, all the volunteers, sponsors and people who participated in our PINK OUT event this past Monday. This event raised a grand total of $3,813 for the Van Andel Institute. Again, thank you to EVERYONE who participated in any way! #proudtobearedhawk.” 

Leading the Lady Red Hawks on the court was Kayla Andres recording 7 kills on 17 attempts, 3 dig,s and 14 serve receptions. Grace Pavelka added 4 kills, while Arianna Rau tallied 2 kills and 6 service points. Setter Madison Outwin recorded 14 assists and 8 service points. The JV team recorded a 2-1 victory,  while the freshman team took a tough loss 25-21, 13-25 and 18-20.

Varsity also competed in the Chippewa Hills Invite on Saturday, October 5, finishing the day with a 1-3 record and beating Ithaca 20-25, 25-14 and 15-13 before falling to Leland 14-25, 16-25; Gladwin 26-24, 22-25, 12-15; and Alma 26-27, 25-17, 6-15. Senior Grace Pavelka led the Red Hawks with 30 kills, 6 aces and 5 blocks. Outside hitter Grace Wilcox added 14 kills, 5 aces and 22 digs while junior Middle hitter Arianna Rau had 6 kills and 6 blocks. Kalli Green contributed 6 kills; Madison Outwin led the service line with 9 aces and 23 service points alongside her 56 assists; and Libero Elizabeth Fettig had 4 aces and 35 digs.

The week’s matches bring the Varsity overall record to 12-15-2 and 2-3 in conference. All three teams traveled to Ottawa Hills on Tuesday, October 8 (see results next week). Thursday, October 10 sets up a big conference tri match up as they travel to Northview to take on OK White undefeated Lowell on Thursday at 6 p.m. followed by Northview at 7:30 p.m.

Girls volleyball starts conference action


 

Cedar Springs Varsity Volleyball played a terrific conference opening match on Tuesday night (Sept. 13) against Lowell, with the Red Arrows prevailing in the three set match on their home floor. Lowell took the sets 19-25, 18-25 and 16-25.

The Red Hawks were led by senior setter Ali Sparling, who put up a strong all around performance with 5 kills, 8 assists, 4 blocks and 7 digs.  Sydney Plummer followed with 3 kills, 3 aces, 8 digs and an assist while Lauren Kostus added 2 kills, 5 service points and 3 aces.  Sienna Wight tallied 6 service points, 2 aces, 1 block and 4 assist while Libero Kaitlyn Coons had 15 digs on the night.

The second conference match on Thursday evening, September 15, at Greenville High School, brought a disappointing three set loss:  19-25, 18-25 and 8-25. Senior Brooke Morris supplied a match high 6 kills and 3 blocks, while freshman Lauren Kostus tallied 5 kills, 7 digs, and a block. Sydney Plummer added 5 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces. Ali Sparling recorded 10 assists, while Sienna Wight had 9. Kaitlyn Coons led the defense with 18 digs.

The Girls Varsity team moves to an overall 1-5-2 record, and drops to 0-2 in the conference.  Their next matches are both home, hosting Ottawa Hills Tuesday evening and Forest Hills Northern on Thursday night.
