Local arena soccer team to hold cancer match

The Great Lakes Wanderers, a local arena soccer team, will hold its third annual charity match this Friday, March 8, from 7-9 p.m., at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex, 4758 Cornfield Dr., Cedar Springs.

This year the match is against Grand Rapids FC.

The charity match began three years ago for a local high school player, Brison Ricker, and his battle with cancer. Later it turned into a #TeamRickerstrong match as his brother Preston was diagnosed with cancer as well. Brison passed away last year, two months before the 2018 match, where we remembered his life and enjoyed the sport he loved so much. This year the soccer community lost another in Rog Garner to cancer. His impact on the community and the game of soccer has moved us to begin a “cancer game.” Proceeds of the match will be donated to the American Cancer Society in Brison and Rog’s names.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. There will be raffles, jersey auctions, merchandise, concessions and more.

“We’ve been able to donate over $3,000 in the years past,” said co-owner Joe Brefczynski. “[We] would love to blow that out of the water!

Tickets are only $10 online or at the door. A limited number is available. Get them online now at https://app.soccerstub.com/.
