Boys basketball team sweeps trio

By Rebekah Cronk

The Cedar Springs Red Hawks boys varsity basketball team is on a roll after winning against all three teams they faced last week.

On Monday February 8, the Cedar Springs varsity basketball team went head to head with Kenowa Hills, which was a makeup game from January 12. The varsity team played a solid game, winning against Kenowa Hills with an ending score of 62-47.

“We were led by Nikc Jackson with 23 points and 7 Rebounds. Taylor VanDyke added 17 points and 9 Rebounds,” said the Cedar Springs varsity basketball coach, Jeff Patin.

On Tuesday, the team played a home game against Belding with a victory score of  64-46. The team had 13 different players that scored throughout the game.

“I was enlightened to see some of the guys who always bust their butts in practice, but don’t usually get to play in the game, finally be able to participate,” said varsity player, Jameson Pavelka.

“Playing against Belding wasn’t too tough of a game because Belding has a younger team and they’re still improving, we have an older team, so it was an easier game,” said varsity basketball player, Dustin Shaw.

On Friday, February 12, the varsity team played their last game for the week at Greenville in a conference game. They led the entire game, which resulted in a win with a score of 55-44. Nikc Jackson led in scoring with 14 points and 7 rebounds, and Taylor VanDyke adding 9 points and 11 rebounds.

“This was good bounce-back week for us. On February 5 we lost to Wyoming by two in a tough battle, so to bounce back with three good wins was good for us,” said Patin.

Looking strong; looking to stay hot

It was a strong week for the varsity team, and they also feel as though the season will continue to be strong.

“I feel pretty good about the season. It started off with its ups and downs but we have been on a comeback lately,” said varsity player Blake Fisher.

“We’ve had games where we’ve played well and we’ve had other games where we’ve struggled, but we all know how well we can play. We have only scratched the surface of how good we can be. The best for us has yet to come,” said Shaw.

The team has had many difficulties throughout the season, but they are willing to work hard, and to work together to be the best they can be to win.

“We are brothers, we have our moments but it’s normal. We just know when it comes down to it we need to be all together in order to come out on top,” said varsity player, Da’Marcus Barnett.

Come on out and cheer on your Red Hawks when they host Northview Friday night at 7 p.m., at Cedar Springs High School.
