ROGER D. TEESDALE


Roger D. Teesdale age 83 passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus. Mr. Teesdale was born July 9, 1937 in Ensley Center, MI the son of Newton and Ethel (Muir) Teesdale. Roger was a very easy going person and enjoyed hunting and farming. He and his wife were able to travel and enjoy many cruises. Surviving are his children, Ken (Doreen) Teesdale, Debbie Laws, Deanna Huston, Herbie Teesdale; grandchildren, Kristi (Mike) Stewart, Roger (Winter) Teesdale, Matthew (Katie) Teesdale, Houston Laws, Kamille (Rob Siefken) Laws, Kristen (Ike) Keith, Chasity (Robert) McCready, Jennifer Teesdale; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Larry (Karen) Teesdale; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; daughter, Denise Gentle; son-in-law, Pat Laws; grandson, Michael Huston. Visitation and service was held Wednesday, October 14 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Private family interment at Crandall Cemetery. MICHAEL J. STEWART


Michael J. Stewart age 70 of Sand Lake, died Friday, October 9, 2020 at his home. Mike was born May 29, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of James and Susan (VanGorder) Stewart. He was a mechanic and very mechanically inclined, he enjoyed NASCAR and racing, especially sprints on dirt. He had a great sense of humor and loved his family. Mike had a big heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. Surviving are his wife, Chris; children, Heather (Tom) Antcliff, Michael Stewart, April (Wes) Wright, John Stiles; grandchildren, Sheila (Trever) Sloan, Dan Antcliff, Amber Stiles, Allison (Chris) Black, John Underly; numerous great grandchildren including, Brayden and Kayson; sisters, Laura (Jeff) Burd, Kathryn Villeneuve. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tim Stewart; son, Stephen Stiles; granddaughter, Angel Groendyk. The family greeted friends Wednesday, October 14 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. A graveside service was held following the visitation at Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. ETHEL L. ERGANG


Ethel L. Ergang age 96 of Cedar Springs died Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Faith Hospice Trillium Woods. Mrs. Ergang was born May 10, 1924 in Greenville, MI the daughter of George and Dorothy (Magee) Waller. She graduated from Cedar Springs High in 1942. She enjoyed making and painting very detailed ceramics, crocheting, sewing, and baking fresh bread, pies and rum cakes. She was extremely generous giving away much of her baked goods and ceramics. She was a founding member of the Gila Mountain United Methodist Church in Yuma, AZ. She worked on her family geneology and loved her family and grandchildren dearly. Surviving are her children, Carol (Stephen) McEvoy, Bryan (Karen) Ergang, Anita (Ken) Meszaros; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen (Bud) Gambee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; sons, John and Keith Ergang; brothers, Robert and Leonard Waller. Visitation and the service was held Monday, October 12 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Pastor Larry French officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.

EDWARD C. WILSON


Edward C. Wilson age 65 of Newaygo, formerly of Cedar Springs, died Wednesday, September 30, 2020. Ed was born December 12, 1954 the son of Jack and Sue (Cummings) Wilson. He was a builder and had his own construction company. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting and fishing. Surviving are his son, Danial Wilson; brother, Robert Wilson; nieces, Sara and Jennifer. A time to remember his life will be held at the Wilson residence and will be announced at a later date.

HELEN JUNE PIKE


Helen June (Burg) Pike age 91 of Sparta passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020 into the presence of her Lord. She was born May 9, 1929 in Cedar Springs, MI the daughter of Edgar and Elsa (Rector) Burg. She had worked alongside her husband on the farm and took care of the home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert of 50 years and an infant son. Surviving are her children, Norman, William, Marsha, Jay, John (Rhonda) and Peggy; grandsons, Russell (Keesha) and Ross; special granddaughter, Jessica; and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded by a brother, George Burg and a sister, Bessie Russell. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her. The family will greet friends and family Saturday, October 10 from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Pastor Dan VanBelzen officiating. Interment Idlewild Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Snow Bible Church.

SHIRLEY ANN MERLINGTON


Shirley Ann Merlington age 83 died Sunday, October 4, 2020 at her son’s home surrounded by family. Shirley was born in Cedar Springs on July 23, 1937 to Murville “Charlie” and Shirley (Empie) Misner. She and her husband Ronny were lifelong Cedar Springs residents. Shirley was Executive Director of the Red Flannel Festival for 13 years and was Grand Marshal in 2015. She also served as Director of the Cedar Springs Chamber of Commerce for 12 years, served on the Cedar Springs Board of Education, Cedar Springs Women’s Club, Glen Hill Unit Past President, and was 5th District President of The American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Other positions include the Board of Review, the DDA, the Elections Commission and the Selective Service Board. In her early years she won Miss Sand Lake Pageant and competed in the Miss Michigan Pageant finishing in the top four. Shirley and Ronny loved everything that had to do with Cedar Springs! In their retirement years, Shirley and Ronny loved going to the “Soaring Eagle”. She was very passionate about her Michigan State Spartans. Surviving are her children, Dominic and Christine Merlington, Robert and Amy Merlington; grandchildren, Rebekah Merlington, Robert Burmeister, Kristofer Merlington, Ethan Robinson, Elizabeth Robinson; sisters, Verdena (Jude) Martin, Lou Ellen (Gene) Fisk, Marlene Ledford, Joyce Johnson; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronny; siblings, Nancy Westervelt, Janet Hunt, Mick and Arlo Misner. The family greeted friends Wednesday, October 7 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. A private family service was held Thursday. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Springs Community Building Development Team 15022 Ritchie Ave. Cedar Springs, MI 49319.

EUGENE PAUL CALKINS


Eugene Paul Calkins age 78 of Cedar Springs, died Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at his home. Gene was born August 17, 1942 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Eugene and Ruth (Wilson) Calkins. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and then the National Guard for many years. He retired from General Motors after 30 years. He worked with horses and was one of the best pickup men in horse racing. He was a self taught and very talented musician and guitar player. Surviving are his wife, Diane; daughter, Tena (Jeff) Chulski; stepchildren, Scott Dozeman, David (Michele) Dozeman, Amy (Marlon) Fairbrother; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, Joseph (Nancy) Calkins, Floyd “Duff” (Betty) Calkins; many cousins, nieces and nephews. The service was held Monday, October 5 at 12:00 p.m. at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Masks were required. Pastor Inge Whittemore officiating. Interment Solon Township Cemetery with military honors by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard.

PETER MOSHER


Friday, September 18, 2020, Peter Mosher of Rockford passed away at age 35 due to complications from a sinus infection. Peter was a lover of Jesus, dependable husband, special father, cherished son and brother, fun and loving uncle, and friend to all. After God, family and friends, their business Hunter Bug Lawncare & Snowplowing was his biggest passion. He genuinely cared about his customers and strived to provide the best quality to everyone he had the privilege of serving. His customers were so much more than the people he worked for they saw him as a friend. Peter served his community in multiple ways. A few of these included serving in his church, being the father to 42 foster children, and serving for a time as a volunteer firefighter for Courtland Township. Peter was wildly curious and loved learning new things and teaching others. He had a talent of finding his way into whatever projects were going on, most of the time without being asked. Peter was a loyal friend. When there were kids around, you would find him in the middle of the group. If you’ve ever met Peter, you’ll never forget him. Peter enjoyed working, playing corn hole, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, playing basketball and being with those he loved. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Emery, as well as aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Grace; sons, Hunter (15) and Bosten (7); parents, Rodney and Sue Mosher; Merle and JoAnne Emery; siblings, Kenny (Stephanie) Mosher, Matt (Susie) Emery, Jennie (Devin) Munson; many nieces and nephews. The family greeted friends on Wednesday, September 23 at the Hydrangea Blu Barn and gathered on Thursday, September 24 at the Heart of Cedar Springs Park for a time of worship in celebration over Peter’s life.

MILDRED N. McANALLY


Mildred N. McAnally, age 90 of Cedar Springs, died Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Bishop Hills Assisted Living, Rockford, MI. Mrs. McAnally was born November 12, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Charles and Mildred (Fletcher) McAnally. She received her Master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University and taught biology at St. Anne’s School in Illinois for 25 years. She loved to write and paint. She had resided in Owosso, MI, Bourbonndais, IL and Cedar Springs, MI. Surviving are her sons, Donald (Roxanne) Hamblin, Steven (Debbie) Hamblin, Douglas (Janette) Hamblin; grandchildren, Carol (Curt) Steinebach, Lee (Lisa) Hamblin, Analise (David) Knott, Charlie Howie, Kenneth Phelps, Gerald Hamblin Jr., Jennifer (Barry) Amonett, Stacy (Tina) Hamblin, Jason Hamblin, James Hamblin, Rebecca Hamblin; many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her former spouse, Eugene Hamblin; son, Gerald Hamblin; brothers, Howard McAnally, Frances McAnally; grandson, Curtis Hamblin. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 22 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church, 6727 Kuttshill Dr, Rockford, MI. Pastor Tim Hoyt officiating. Interment Solon Township Cemetery.

LEON E. AVERY


Leon E. Avery age 86 of Cedar Springs died Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at his home. Leon was born July 5, 1934 in Cedar Springs, MI, the son of Donald and Caroline (Townes) Avery. He served in the US Army. He was Worshipful Master of Cedar Springs Lodge 213 (4 times), a Member of OES Job’s Daughters Bethel 86 Dad. He retired from the Kent County Road Commission after 41 years. After his retirement he worked at Great Day. Leon served on the Cedar Springs City Council for 20 years and the Cedar Springs Fire Department for 25 years. He is most recognized as Mr. Red Flannel driving the Keystone Kop truck for years and was a Keystone Kop for 54 years or more. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Deb (Harold) Yancey, Nancy (Edward) Johnson; grandchildren, Amber (Eric) Anderson, Mandy (Josh) Tomlinson, Michael Leon (Brandy) Yancey, Mallory Johnson (Christopher Kieda), Mark (Julie) Johnson, and Harold (Jeannie O’Malley) Yancey Jr; great-grandchildren, Brooke (Taylor Krulek) Mason, Chloe Mason, Rebecca Mason, Mia Hurtado, Isabelle Yancey, Michael Leon Yancey Jr., Chase Johnson; great-great-grandson, River Leon Krulek; sister-in-law, Peggy Avery; nephews, Michael (Denise) Avery, Tim (Kim) Avery, Philip (Janet) Stanton; nieces, Ida Clement, Donna Kay Stanton; special niece, Dawnette (Steve) Roberts; special friends, Mark Strypko, Rick and Judy Fisher. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl (Joseph), Jerry, David Avery; sister, Madeline Piasecki; sisters-in-law, Verna Stanton, Jean (Violet) Avery; brothers-in-law, Donald Stanton, Stan Piasecki; special uncle, Edward Townes.
