Voters turned out in record numbers across Michigan on Tuesday, March 8, to vote in the state’s presidential primary.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders bested Hillary Clinton in a surprising upset in the Democratic primary, taking 49.75 percent of the votes, to Clinton’s 48.23 percent.

Businessman Donald Trump carried the Republican vote with 36.5 percent, followed by Texas senator Ted Cruz with 24.86 percent, and Ohio governor John Kasich with 24.23 percent.

While Trump may have won Michigan, it was Cruz that was the Republican winner in Kent County, with 35,185 votes to Trump’s 22,742. Cruz also won several other counties in western Michigan.

Reportedly more than 2.5 million people voted in the primary Tuesday, a record since the modern primary started in 1972. Just over 34 percent of registered voters turned out to vote. Voter participation in Kent County ranged from a low of 18 percent to a high of 54 percent. The City of Cedar Springs had a turnout of 27.45 percent.
