Marlan LeRoy Newland, born May 4, 1947, died peacefully at his home in Cedar Springs, Michigan on Monday, November 29, 2021, at the age of 74. Marlan was preceded in death by his mother, Darline (Winters) Newland; his father, Roy Newland; his brother, Bryan Newland, and his sister, Karla (Newland) Roebuck. He is survived by his wife of 16 years Bonnie (Brassington) Newland; his daughter, Lorna Goolsby (Greg); stepson, Jay Thebo; step-daughter, Leah Norton (Joe); step-son, Cary Armstrong, and step-daughter, Lindsay Williams (Carlos). He is also survived by his grandson. Reshay Newland (Krystal) and step-grandchildren, Tyler Thebo (Lillie), Sawyer Thebo, Jesslyn Nichols (Maxwell), John Brazier, and Alexzia Brazier.  Also surviving are his sister, Shirley Kruis (Terry); brother, Randy Newland (Cheryl); sister, Paula Brink (Tom); brother-in-law, Bob Roebuck, and sister-in-law, Susan Newland.  He also leaves a great-granddaughter, Khalisia Newland as well as many loved nieces and nephews. Marlan was born in Grant, Michigan. He was the very first Eagle Scout from Cedar Springs. He attended Cedar Springs High School where he enjoyed football, baseball, and tennis. After graduation he went into the Army. He spent most of his working life at Michigan Wheel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was a CNC operator for 35 years. After his retirement, Marlan and Bonnie moved to Lake Placid, Florida where they lived for 10 years.  They returned to Cedar Springs in 2019. Marlan’s favorite pastimes were fishing with his lifelong friend, Norm Hill (Valerie) and watching sports on TV. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, golf, and playing pool. He was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Moose Lodge. He loved hanging out with his friends. Marlan’s humor, faithful friendship, and quick wit will be missed by all his family and friends. A memorial service will be held in the spring on May 4, 2022, his 75th birthday.
