Wilderness Amazing Race

West Michigan outdoor lovers have just two weeks left to sign up for the Michigan Adventure Race: Cannonsburg Edition. The June 12 event starts and finishes at Cannonsburg Ski & Ride Center but covers many miles of woods, roads, trails and water northeast of Grand Rapids. Registration and details at www.miadventurerace.com.

One- to four-person teams will set out biking, hiking and paddling to hidden checkpoints pre-marked on a map, collecting as many points as they can. It’s like a treasure hunt, but much sweatier. Most checkpoints are in local and county parks or along gravel roads racers will bike on. Teams can pick the 5-hour race or the 10-hour race.

The goal is to find as many checkpoints (represented by orange and white orienteering flags) as you can and get back to the finish before the cut-off. You can skip checkpoints or even entire activities (e.g., the singletrack bike trails if that’s not your thing) and do what you like best, but the more you find the better you’ll rank. You’ll need a compass to find some of the checkpoints in the woods – just basic skills that can be learned in 30 minutes online or at our June 5 navigation clinic. Other than that, it’s just reading and following maps.

“Everything is outdoors and we have more than 40,000 square feet to spread out before and after the race. It will be great to celebrate with Cannonsburg tacos, beer and their Sweet Spot treats after the race.”

The charity partner is The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Michigan. Myasthenia Gravis is a neuromuscular disease affecting around 28 out of 100,000 people. The foundation serves as an educational and support resource for those diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis and provides healthcare professionals with the education they need to care for those with this disease.
