Finally, game time!

Finally, game time!

The long wait is over!  A season that began with a week of practice over 4 months ago, before being shutdown, is finally set to begin and the Cedar Springs Girls Basketball Team is overjoyed and ready to go.

After a few weeks of non-contact practices, schools were finally given the green light to start competitions. In a condensed season, where the team will play three games per week, the Lady Red Hawks will rely heavily on their senior leadership as they compete in the OK Gold Conference.

The 2021 Red Hawks return 4 out of 5 starters from last season including three four-year varsity players in seniors Kaelyn Colclasure, Maggie Prins, and Avery Sparling, who have played over 60 varsity contests each in their careers.  In addition, junior Darrah Miller enters her second season at the varsity level.

Sparling averaged over 8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game last season. Prins averaged 6 points and 4.5 rebounds a game a season ago and really established herself as a premier defender. As floor general, Colclasure ran the team from the point, averaging 6.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game. Miller chipped in 5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2 assists per contest.

Seniors Jenna Powell and Gloria Alverez also return to the line-up for their senior seasons. Both will be relied on to provide consistency, leadership, and an offensive spark during their senior campaigns.  Senior Arianna Rau will miss the season after undergoing knee surgery this winter.

Newcomers to the team include junior guards Aubrie French and Chloe Grifhorst, who will provide depth in the backcourt. They are joined by their fellow junior classmates Lily Howland, Ella See, Gracie Garchow and sophomore Jessa Patin in the front court rotation.

The Lady Red Hawks kick off game action this week as they travel to Kenowa Hills on Wednesday, February 10. Tip off time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

The rest of the schedule for this week and next is:

  • Thursday, February 11 at Ottawa Hills 4:00/5:30/7:00pm
