Matthew Arlyn Wise, age 45 of Sand Lake, went home to be with his Lord late Tuesday, November 24, 2020. He was born June 19, 1975 in Grand Rapids, the son of Gerry and Debbie (Ball) Wise. Matthew graduated from Cedar Springs High School, class of 1994. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, movies, and the Detroit Lions. Monday nights were for watching wrestling with his dad, and Tuesday nights meant popcorn and NCIS with his mom. He enjoyed Friday afternoon cards with his friends, Ray and Fern. Matthew was a member of Spencer Mills Church and loved his Christian church family there. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces, and treasured time at the family cabin in Marion. Matt lived far longer than doctors expected despite becoming a paraplegic in an accident in 2011 and surviving two cancer diagnoses. He was tough and courageous and an inspiration to those around him. Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Arlyn and Lucille Wise and Raymond and Geneva Ball and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his parents, Gerry and Debbie of Sand Lake; his “pain in the butt sister”, Melissa Stewart of Sand Lake; nieces, Alexis Fleming, Desiree Wise, and Brianna Wise; great-nephew, Kamari; several aunts and uncles; and his special caregiver and adopted sister for the past nine years, Brenda Winters. Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Spencer Mills Church, Pastor Alan Flowers officiating. Graveside services immediately following at Spencer Township Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at church prior to the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Spencer Mills Church Deacon Fund, and memories and messages of condolence may be shared at www.hurstfh.com.
