3rd Annual Community Celebration DayAug. 9: The Cedar Springs Area Chamber of Commerce would like to come to downtown Cedar Springs on Saturday, August 9 from 10 am to 5 pm for their 3rd Annual Community Celebration Day – Business Sidewalk Sale Expo. Family Safety Day

Aug. 9: Courtland Fire Department is holding a family safety day on August 9th from 11 am to 2 pm at 7480 – 14 Mile Rd., Rockford. The fire trucks and station will be open for touring. Michigan State Police and Kent County Sheriff will both be having cars there. We will have an ambulance from Rockford Ambulance available for tours. There will be water activities plus we will have lots of prizes. There will be hot dogs, chips, and a drink for a low price of $3 per person. Come out an support your local fire department. #32

5th Annual Free Community Picnic

Aug. 10: Come join us for the 5th annual Free Community Picnic on Sunday, August 10 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at Salisbury Park in town, Sand Lake. Free lunch, live band, games, bounce house and school supplies. All free. Hosted by Sand Lake area churches, Resurrection Lutheran, Mary Queen of Apostles, Sand Lake United Methodist and Ensley Methodist. Free and open to the public. #32


Foraging: Wild Plants for Food and Medicine

Aug. 11: Join herbalist and forager Lisa Rose Starner to learn about local plants and “weeds” that can be used for food and herbal medicine. Monday, August 11 at 6:30 pm at the Sand Lake/Nelson Township KDL Branch, 88 Eighth St. #32


VBS at Resurrection Lutheran

Aug. 11-15: “Gold Rush” VBS starts on August 11 thru August 15th. Free dinner served at 5:30 pm every night followed by an exciting and energetic evening mining for the truest Gold Rock. We welcome any and all children pre-K – 5th grade. Please have your children bring in non-perishable food items as we are also hosting a competitive and rewarding food drive all week long. Wild Wednesdays at HCNC

Aug. 13: “Buggy about Bugs” Six legged creatures among us, let us find them! Study them! Grab a net and a plastic container and we will be off to the prairie and the woods to see what 6-legged creatures live here at HCNC. We will look for eggs and larvae while learning about insects’ life cycles, find predators and prey and catch and release a bug or two. No log shall be left unturned in this insect adventure. At the end of the day, we will recycle our insects into fish food at our lake Chrishaven. Rain or Shine. Bring a lunch, dress for the outdoors (no flip-flops or crocs) $8 per child per day. Parents are not required, however are encouraged to come along free of charge. Ages: 5 -15 years. All classes are from 10 am to 2 pm. Rummage Sale at CS UMC

Aug. 13-14: The Cedar Springs United Methodist Women are having a rummage sale in the fellowship hall of the United Methodist Church, 140 S. Main St. Hours are 9 am to 7 pm on Wednesday, August 13th, and 9 am to 2 pm on Thursday, August 14th. #31,32p


The Art and Science of Canning

Aug. 14: Join Annette McBride as she explains the science behind canning fruits and vegetables at home and demonstrates how to get started with basic canning. Thursday, August 14 at 6:30 pm at Spencer Township KDL Branch, 14960 Meddler, Gowen. #32


Container Garden Show and Display

Aug. 14-16: The Greenville Garden Club invites you to enter your favorite plant/flower/edible container arrangement for display at the Flat River Community Library. All ages… Kids can use their toys, trucks, etc. to create cool planters. Open to the public. Winners selected by people’s choice voting. Children’s division – 5-12 yrs, Teen division – 13-17 yrs, and adults. The display will be open Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm, Friday, 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm. Entries to be brought to the Library between 11 am and 7 pm on Thursday. Public voting will take place on Friday, August 15. Registration for entries no later than Monday August 11. Rocket Cheer Camp

Aug. 16: Sign up not for Cedar Springs Rocket Cheer Camp! Grades 3rd thru 8th grade – everyone welcome. Camp will be Saturday, August 16th from 9 am to 12:30 pm at Red Hawk Elementary in the gym. Go to www.cedarspringsyouthcheerleading.com and download registration forms and mail them in. We will take registrations at the door however, you will not be guaranteed a camp T-shirt. Auditions for October Play 

Aug. 16 & 18: The Cedar Springs Community Players are seeking 5 adult females and 2 adult males for their Fall production of the comedy “Blythe Spirit,” written by Noel Coward and directed by Peter Huschilt. Show dates are October 23-25 at the historic Kent Theatre. Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 16 from 10 am to noon and on Monday, August 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Cedar Springs United Methodist Church, on Main Street in Cedar Springs.
