Several fire departments responded to the scene of a fire last Friday, June 29, at Maston Lake in Spencer Township.
The fire broke out at a home on Shawano Drive, just after 4 p.m. According to neighbor Kelly Thompson, he was driving up the road trying to beat the storm home and saw smoke rolling across the road. When he pulled into the driveway, his daughters ran out of the house and told him the neighbor’s house was on fire. He said the man was just standing outside of the door looking dazed. “The flames were almost getting him,” said Thompson. “You could tell something wasn’t right.”
The man told Thompson that he had been sleeping and woke up to find his house on fire. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. He was the only one home at the time.
Maple Valley Fire and Montcalm Township Fire assisted Spencer Fire at the scene.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
