Group attacks couple New Year’s Day

-N-Assault-Howard-City-PD-logoThe Howard City Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance to identify suspects involved in an early morning attack, on January 1, that hospitalized three people.

According to Police Chief Steve DeWitt, a 20-year-old Howard City male and his 21-year-old girlfriend got out of their vehicle, in downtown Howard City, at about 1:30 a.m. New Year’s Day, to go into their home. A group of intoxicated people walking nearby yelled obscenities at the girlfriend, and the boyfriend confronted them. The group, including one female, then severely attacked the victims, kicking and hitting them both with bottles in the head before fleeing. Both victims required hospitalization. One suspect also required hospitalization.

Chief DeWitt said that two subjects involved had warrants for their arrest not related to the assault, and both were arrested the next day after they were medically treated.

DeWitt said one person had their finger severely injured and was treated for injuries at a hospital, and that police would be happy to speak to them again and take a statement.

The Howard City Police Department is requesting witnesses or those with information to contact police at 231-937-4311 to assist in clearing up a number of questions.
