FREE TAX PREPARATION

Cedar Springs Public Schools has again been chosen as a 2012 VITA sight. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a Community Partnership between United Way and the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition. This program offers free tax preparation to low income, the elderly and the disabled. Your help is needed!

It is only with the help of our volunteers that we can make our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites successful, and bring millions back into the county! Volunteers are needed to prepare taxes for low-moderate income individuals and families. This is a tremendous opportunity for someone who is looking to make a profound impact on another’s life. No previous tax experience needed. IRS-Certification Training will be provided. Volunteers commit to helping to prepare taxes 3 hours a week for 8 weeks. The only qualifications that we require are a willingness to help others! Previous tax knowledge is helpful, but not required. Also basic computer knowledge is a plus. IRS Training is provided. If you are interested, please call Jennifer Willette, Community School Coordinator at (616)696-7330 x6295.

CEDAR SPRINGS PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAVE TAX PAYERS $1.5 MILLION

Cedar Springs Public Schools is proud to announce the successful sale of its 2012 Refunding Bonds in the amount of $10,460,000. The Bonds are being issued for the purpose of refunding the School District’s outstanding 2003 School Building and Site and Refunding Bonds and to pay the costs of issuing the Bonds. The 2012 Refunding Bonds reduce the School District interest expense approximately $1,534,940 for the taxpayers and will occur through lower debt payments over the next 12 years.

The School District’s 2012 Refunding Bonds were sold at a true interest rate of 2.23% with a final maturity of 2024.

Standard & Poor’s Rating Services evaluated the School District’s credit quality. S&P affirmed the School District’s outstanding underlying rating of “A+”. The rating agency cited the School District’s stable enrollment trend, very strong financial performance supported by strong reserves and moderate debt in their rational for maintaining the rating of the School District at this level.

Congratulations to the Cedar Springs Board of Education, Administration and Staff for maintaining a collaborative, transparent and financially stable environment for the district in extremely difficult financial times.

It’s great that the Cedar Springs Athletic Boosters are having a pot luck fundraiser but you should be supporting your local businesses. Cedar Springs has an American Legion.
