The gates of Heaven opened wide on October 13, 2012 to receive the spirit of June (Lester) Baron who departed this life on earth to receive her glory and her gift of eternal life. June was born on November 30, 1934 to Joseph Leland (Drib) and Sophia Asdell in the rural community of Doans, nestled in the hills of southwestern Indiana. She was the only daughter in the Asdell household to three older brothers and a younger brother yet to come. She attended Scotland School from 1st through 12th grad and was “yell leader” (cheer leader) for the basketball team during the same era and in the same general geographical location depicted in the movie “Hoosiers.” Upon graduation she married Marvin Eugene “Red” George, a union that resulted in three children, Mark, Pam and Cindy. In 1958, at the young age of 23 she became a single parent upon the death of her husband. With loving support of family and friends, she kept her family together and safe. In 1959 she married Charles (Jack) Lester, a union that resulted in three children, Joe, Ruth, and Kathryn. In 1967 the family relocated to Cedar Springs, Michigan where all six children graduated from high school. June worked at various businesses in Cedar Springs including; Dr. Dodd D.D.S., Conrad I.G.A., and Dave’s Produce before joining Cedar Springs Public Schools as a school bus driver, a job which she performed faithfully for several years and in the process made some very great friends. June relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada around 1980 where she worked as a cashier in Sports Book at the Stardust Casino until its closure and eventually retiring from the Rio. While in Las Vegas, June married Ron Baron who survives. She is survived by six children; Mark (Robin) Lester of Richland, Pam (Doug) Middleton of Cedar Springs, Cindy George of Grand Rapids, Joe (Maria) Lester of Grand Rapids, Ruth (Jeff) Scott of Grayling, and Kathryn Knapp of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by three brothers; Kenneth Asdell of Odon, Indiana, Dr. Ben (Shirley) Asdell of Loogootee, Indiana, and Bill (Sandy) Asdell of Manteno Illinois, plus one sister, Mary Ellen Asdell of Odon, Indiana. June leaves behind many friends and relatives including one lifelong friend, Eleanor Kingsley of Bloomfield, Indiana. She was a loving and nurturing grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sophia Asdell; one brother Joe Asdell, husbands Marvin George, and Jack Lester, and two nephews Dave and Terry Asdell. June was a competitive Scrabble and card player and avid Indiana University basketball fan. She had one brother (Bill Asdell) and one daughter (Cindy George) that played basketball at the college level. Cremation has already taken place and a memorial service for June is planned for October 27th, 2012, 1:00 pm at the Scotland United Methodist Church in Scotland, Indiana.
