The Cedar Springs Red Hawks freshmen football squad took the field last Thursday at Greenville’s newly unveiled stadium, and with little evidence of it in the first half, ended up in a battle with the Yellow Jackets that wouldn’t be decided until the last snap. In the end the Red Hawks came up just short of a gritty, spirited comeback, and fell to the Yellow Jackets 26-22.
It was definitely a tale of two halves with the Yellow Jackets up 20-0 at halftime. But the second half belonged to the Red Hawks. They came out fired up, when most teams would have called it quits. The Red Hawks dug deep, came together as a team, and drove up and down the field, with one score after another. Led by their defense once again, in the second half, Cedar forced some key turnovers, and got right back into the game. The game came down to the final snap, with Cedar’s effort falling just short on Greenville’s 40-yard line.
Coach Covey said, “The kids showed a lot of heart this week, playing hard all the way until the end of the game, and as coaches we are proud of how the players came out and gave it their all.”
