Sand Lake boxers pummel competition

Three Sand Lake boxers entered the 2nd Annual Pre-Super Bowl Fight Night Saturday in Grand Rapids and all three came away victorious.

Sand Lake started the night with 165lb Cody Cross vs. MGGA’s Julian Eberhart. Cross was able to control his opponent with his jab and out box him which allowed him to come away with a 5-0 decision. “I would have liked to stick to my game plan better, but I am glad I came away with the win. I think our coaches prepared us well, which is a testament to why our team went 3-0 tonight,” said Cross.

In Sand Lake’s second bout of the night, Sand Lake police officer Steve Brandow won his bout in dramatic fashion with a second round KO over MGGA’s Ruben Buckley. “It was a really hard fight and I plan on fighting again. I would like to thank my family and my coaches and also all the Sand Lake boxers who helped me get ready for this fight,” said Brandow.

In the 4-round main event of the night, Ricardo Rios was matched against MGGA’s Joshua Maysonet. Maysonet, the 2005 141lb state champ, came into the bout undefeated. Ricardo started the bout off slow but turned up the pressure in the 2nd round, after he hit Maysonet with a left hook that wobbled him and forced the referee to give him a standing eight count. Rios continued to punish Maysonet in the 3rd and 4th rounds, before coming away with the easy 5-0 decision. “I knew he was undefeated before the fight but I also knew he hadn’t been in with the same level of competition as me,” said Rios.

Next up for Sand Lake is the 2012 Golden Gloves.
