Man arrested for stealing vehicle

Montcalm County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested a 17-year-old Owosso man Monday, August 8, for home invasion and unauthorized driving away of a motor vehicle in Montcalm Township.

On August 3, a home in the 7500 block of Sidney Road was burglarized, and the homeowner’s 2001 Chevy Silverado was stolen, along with other items. Over the weekend the pickup was recovered when it was stopped in Shiawassee County with four people inside. The suspect confessed to the crimes to Montcalm County detectives. Authorities may still seek charges on the man for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Sheriff’s deputies continue to work on a recent rash of home invasions and stolen vehicles occurring in the county. On Sunday, August 7, a citizen was camping on Wicker Road in Evergreen Township, when he noticed a pickup truck parked on state land. After several hours he called the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office. Responding deputies found that the vehicle, a 1998 Dodge Dakota, had been reported stolen from the Derby Lake area around August 4.

Sheriff Bill Barnwell reminds the public to keep a watchful eye on your neighborhoods, and report any suspicious vehicles or persons to law enforcement. If the public has any information on any crime and wishes to remain anonymous, call the Sheriff Detectives tip line at 989-831-7593.
