Joyce R. Smith

Mrs. Joyce R. Smith, age 78, of Cedar Springs, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 5, 2011. When she was two years old, her mother died. Joyce moved from Kent City to Detroit where she lived with her Uncle Clarence and Aunt Cora who raised her. She moved back to the west side of the state and met Edwin who was visiting a farm with his friend, Jim Travis. When Ed saw Joyce, he knew it was love at first sight. They were married and enjoyed nearly 63 years together as husband and wife and best friends. Every year Joyce made a year book album of special moments occurring that year. For ten years she worked at K-Mart. Joyce was an excellent homemaker who canned, made strawberry jam, and enjoyed fishing with her family. She was very proud when she, Edwin, and her two sons were baptized on the same day at Rockford Baptist Church. While building their home in Cedar Springs, Joyce and Edwin lived in a camper. Joyce was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs and daily had devotions. She lived her life as a compassionate caregiver to everyone. Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Edwin; children, Patricia and Daniel Fry of Grand Rapids, John and Sue Smith of Cedar Springs, Alan and Meme Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Terry Smith of Rockford and his special friend, Mareen; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Becky Fry, and her sisters, Avis Stoffer, Thelma Dannenberg, Anita Gay, and her brothers, Clifford and Russell. The Service of Praise and Thanksgiving for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ for Mrs. Smith was held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs with Pastor Jim Howard officiating. Interment will be in E. Nelson Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs. Relatives and friends met with the family at the Pederson Funeral Home on Tuesday and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Arrangements by The Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford www.pedersonfuneralhome.com
