A Howard City man was shot and killed Wednesday evening after a standoff with police.
The Michigan State Police Lakeview Post responded to a home on W. Gates Rd in Howard City about 5:30 p.m. after a caller asked police to check on the well-being of Matthew Speese, 47. Speese reportedly pulled a gun on police when they arrived.
Police said they were able to talk to Speese for a time, but he was very agitated. He was shot by an officer about 7:21 p.m. and later pronounced dead at Butterworth Hospital. No information had been released at press time on Thursday regarding what led up to the shooting or what deputy was involved.
The case is still under investigation.Assisting at the scene was MSP Lakeview, MSP Rockford, MSP Newaygo, Montcalm County Sheriff Department, Howard City Police Department, CMET, ambulance Alpha 7 and Rescue 29.
