Sand Lake man injured in awning collapse

A Sand Lake man was injured Wednesday when the awning he was standing under collapsed on him.
According to the Kent County Sheriff Department, Garry Kadwell, 41, of Sand Lake, was one of four men injured when the 50-foot by 20-foot exterior awning at the Spartan Stores warehouse on 76th Street in Cutlerville collapsed just after noon on Wednesday, February 2. Three of the men were momentarily trapped underneath but were freed by other employees before rescue workers arrived on the scene.
According to police, the awning was a large industrial roof attached to the warehouse and used for an outdoor break area. It had no walls, and a large amount of snow had accumulated on the top, presumably causing the structure to fall.
Kadwell suffered leg pain and head lacerations, and was taken to Spectrum Butterworth. The other men injured were from Byron Center, Wyoming, and Jenison. Injuries included abdominal, back and knee pain. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
