Cedar Springs Varsity boys basketball season preview

Cedar Springs Varsity boys basketball season preview

The Roster has been set for the 2010 Cedar Springs Boys Varsity Basketball team and the Red Hawks are preparing for the new season.  The team is made up of 6 seniors and 9 juniors, and returns 7 players from last year’s team.
Andy Secor is entering his 7th year as Head Coach of the Red Hawks. He has led Cedar Springs to an impressive 89-48 record during that time, including two League Championships and three District Championships. He spoke about this year’s team.
“Our team is a very big unknown. We only return three players who were part of the regular playing rotation last year,” he explained. “I think we have a chance to be balanced offensively, but there certainly will be times where it will be challenging to score. I think we have the potential to defend and rebound well. For us to be successful, we are going to have to do a great job taking care of the ball, get contributions from lots of players, and be very solid defensively. I would expect we will play in our share of low scoring battles where every possession is very important.”
The Varsity assistant coaches this year will again be former Cedar Springs star players Nick Brott and Jimmy Booth. Both were 3-year starters for the Red Hawks and won multiple championships as players. They bring valuable experience, energy and passion to the Red Hawks coaching staff.
Here is a look at the Red Hawk players:
#1 Tyler Baker 6’ -0” Senior….Baker, an all-conference linebacker on the football team, will provide a physical toughness at the high post position. Baker played in 21 games last season and led the team in “charges taken” with 10, a stat that is very important to the Cedar coaches.
#4 Alec Hanmer 6’-3” Senior…”He is an athletic player who will provide us with some offense,” said Coach Secor. Hanmer appeared in 12 games last season and averaged 2.5 points per game, shooting an impressive 75 percent from the 2-point range, 50 percent on 3-pointers, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.
#10 Jason Gingrich 5’-11” Junior… Jason was the point guard for the JV last year. He is quick and athletic and is capable of scoring from anywhere on the court.
#11 Jake Holtrop 6’-0” Senior…Jake appeared in 10 games last season and scored 10 points and had 7 assists. Jake was chosen as a team captain for this season.
#12 Hank Porter 5’-11” Junior ….With the graduation of 3 of the top 4 scorers from last years team, the Red Hawks will look to Porter to help fill the void. Porter was the 3rd leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder last season, averaging 7 points and 4 boards per game. “Hank is a physical athlete who played on varsity as a sophomore. He is playing with much more confidence this season but fighting off a knee injury from football season,” noted Coach Secor. Porter is also one of the three team captains this year.
#21 Kyle Chaney 6’-3” Senior…”Kyle has worked very hard on his game in the off season. He is a senior captain, very versatile, and we hope he can provide some experience at the wing position,” said Coach Secor. In 12 games last season, Chaney scored 15 points, gathered 14 rebounds and took 3 charges.
#23 Ryan Dines 6’-1” Junior… Dines played in all 22 varsity games last season as a sophomore and tallied 35 points, 55 rebounds and 27 assists. “Ryan is one of our best defenders and a very good athlete. We are looking for him to take a big step forward this year,” commented coach Secor.
#32 Trey Reed 6’-1” Junior…”Trey was also on the varsity as a sophomore. He has a great basketball IQ and is solid in all areas of the game. He communicates very well on the floor and plays with great effort,” said Coach Secor. Reed averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds per game last year and shot over 46 percent from the floor.
#40 Derek Ash 6’-4” Junior…according to Coach Secor, Derek “Had a very good JV season and we expect him to step right in and play for us at the varsity level. Derek has good footwork and soft hands, a great combination for a post player.”
#54 Andrew Klompstra 6’-5” Senior… an all conference football lineman, Andrew returns to the basketball program after a year off. Coach Secor describes him as “A physical presence who can give us some scoring on the inside.” Klompstra should also be a strong rebounder for the Red Hawks.
Rounding out the roster for the Red Hawks are this group of first year varsity players:
#5 Tyler Hinton 6’-1” Senior… will provide depth and athleticism at the post position.
#20 Justin Hanes 5’-9” Junior… brings enthusiasm and energy to the team and is a good 3-point shooter.
#25 Tyler Covell 6’-1” Junior…Quarterback on the football team, Covell is a very smart player and a good outside shooter bringing depth to the guard position.
#30 Brandon Slater 6’-0 Junior… A starter on the JV team last year, Slater is atheletic and versitile and provides depth at the wing position.
#42 Isaac Golczynski 6”-1” Junior…”Ike” is quick and athletic and a solid outside shooter.
The Red Hawks will again compete in the OK Blue Conference and will look to improve upon their 5th place finish of last year. “I think the Blue is a solid basketball league with good coaches and I expect the same this year,” said Coach Secor .” I think the league is very deep this year. There are no gimmees.  Each and every night is going to be a battle. It is almost impossible to predict an order of finish. Comstock Park is the two-time defending champion and they are the team to beat,” he said.
There is yet another scheduling change this year for the Boys Varsity. On most Tuesday nights, there will be a traditional triple header with the Boys Freshmen games at 4 pm, JV at 5:30, and Varsity following at about 7 PM.
On Friday Nights, like last year, there will be Boys/Girls Varsity double headers. The change for this year is that the Boys Friday games will be first and start at 6 PM, followed by the Girls  games at 7:30. Fans are encouraged to pay close attention to the game starting times so you don’t miss any of the action.
Coach Secor had these final thoughts on this year’s team. “We are excited about our basketball team this season. While we have a long way to go, the guys have been working hard in practice to pick up our offensive and defensive systems.  I know we are a big unknown and we will have our share of struggles this year, I am looking forward to this season and being around this group of parents and players.”
The Red Hawk Boys opening game is Tuesday December 7 at Greenville with the Freshmen at 4 p.m., followed by the JV, then the Varsity game at 7 p.m.
