Superintendent Ron McDermed announced last week that all seven Cedar Springs Public Schools buildings in the district have been recommended for accreditation by the North Central Association Commission. And not only that, they received the top two highest ratings possible on all seven standards reviewed.
“This is an outstanding report,” remarked McDermed in an email to staff, parents and community members. “It represents the efforts and accomplishments that are possible when school and community come together in the common goal of quality education for all kids.”
He said a team of six educators from around the country visited the district November 7-10. They reviewed all seven buildings in the district and interviewed 229 stakeholders in the district, including students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, community members, business partners and board members.
The district received a “highly functional rating” for standards on vision and purpose, and governance and leadership. Noting special recognition included exemplary high impact early childhood programming, collaborative “can do” culture, real partnerships between the school and community, maximization of expertise and leadership skills, and several other items.
The school system received an “operational rating” for standards on teaching and learning, documenting and using results, resources and support systems, stakeholder communications and relationships, and commitment to continuous improvement. They received special recognition for many practices, one of which included sound financial practices resulting in a 15 percent fund balance during difficult economic times.
“I am thankful to be a part of a school system that works so hard everyday to be the best we can be for each and every child. It is particularly rewarding to be recognized by others for our work,” said McDermed.
