Panthers pounce on Red Hawks

The Red Hawks penchant for slow starts came home to roost this last Friday as Comstock Park jumped out to a 20-point lead on their homecoming and Cedar could not muster a comeback. Comstock’s Kevin McCarthy ran 25 times for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cedar showed some life in the second quarter behind the running of Conner Burrows, Alex Hemry, and Zac Carpentier. To cap the drive, Tyler Covell threw a 30-yard touchdown to Brandon Slater to close the score to 20-7. But on the ensuing drive the Panthers drove right down the field to close out the first half scoring at 27-7.

The defense did tighten up in the second half behind leading tacklers Trevor Hemry and Tyler Baker, but it was not enough as Cedar’s offense sputtered and Comstock Park extended the lead and finished the scoring at 37-7. This loss does not place the conference championship out of reach, but it does make its path that much more difficult. With three games remaining, the Red Hawks will have to win two of them to automatically qualify for the playoffs.

The Red Hawks return home tomorrow for a conference game against Belding. Don’t let this last loss get the boys down. Fill the stands and show your support!
