Man runs off road, hits tree

A man ran off a road in Montcalm County last Wednesday and hit a tree.

According to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Department, John Albert DeJong, 28, was driving a 2002 KIA westbound on County Farm Road, west of Russell Road in Eureka Township, at a high rate of speed when the vehicle dropped off the south side of the road. When the vehicle returned to the road, it slid sideways and left the road on the north side and struck a tree on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

DeJong, the only occupant in the vehicle, was pinned inside and was extricated by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services and Greenville Dept. of Public Safety. He was transported to Spectrum Hospital by Air Care helicopter out of Kalamazoo.
Speed and alcohol are both believed to have contributed to the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
