CTA cross country impressive at Benzie Central invite

CTA’s Grace VanEnk, Alicia Beck, and Maegan Roach fight for position at the start of the Benzie Central “Eldon Moss” Invite.

The Creative Technologies Academy cross country team ran against tough competition at the Eldon Moss invitational Saturday, August 28, at Benzie Central High School. The Chargers began this new season with expectations of surpassing last year’s performances and looking to have the most successful season in the school’s history.

“We took our first steps towards meeting our goals Saturday with an impressive showing by both our boys and girls squads,” commented head coach Gerry Verwey.

In the men’s varsity race, CTA finished in fifth place among the 18 schools competing. Leading the men were Jeff Spicer (19:30), Jeremiah Wortz (19:57), and Andre Winters (20:06). All three had strong support from Benett Tomandl and Matt Hoskins who helped the Chargers in scoring.  “Without Benett’s solid race and Matt’s personal best performance, we would not have been as successful. I am very proud of the effort by all five runners,” noted Verwey.

The ladies’ race proved equally exciting for CTA. Maegan Roach led the team with an amazing performance. Roach placed second overall, only ten seconds behind first place, in a time of 21:14. Grace VanEnk (24:46) and Alicia Beck (24:56) earned medal honors as well. Danielle Davies and Esther Hubbard provided the needed places to earn the Chargers third place in team scoring. “At the half-mile mark, I knew we were running well. The ladies really pushed themselves and made other teams notice that CTA is here to compete,” remarked Verwey.

CTA will next face competition on September 8 at Tri-County High School, as well as the Big Red Invitation at Muskegon on September 11.
