One of Cedar Springs’ own hometown heroes likes the idea of a Veteran’s Park so much that he decided to make a donation toward one of the four light poles planned for the park.

DPW Superintendent Jerry Hall, who served in Viet Nam, gave $1,500 to the city towards the purchase of the light pole Monday. Hall said seeing the park’s organizer, Dan Brown, working to get help from the community for the park moved him to make a donation. “I’m just glad I could help,” he said.

Hall served 24 years in the Army, three in the active Army and the rest in the National Guard, until April 2007. Her served as a small arms weapons instructor.

Brown is the uncle of Timothy Brown, who died a few years ago in the war for Iraqi Freedom.

The park will be located on a city-owned lot at the corner of Oak and Main Street in Cedar Springs, along the south side of Cedar Creek. Many businesses and volunteers are donating time and equipment for the landscaping and other amenities. However, the plans call for four light poles, at $1,500 each. Hall paid for one, and they are hoping his donation will bring in money for the other three.

“This is great. I appreciate it a lot,” said Brown, about Hall’s check.

“We appreciate all you’ve done,” said Mayor Charlie Watson.

There will also be space for three monuments at the park, including one for Tim Brown. But Brown said that would come after the park is completed. They hope to have it done by July 4.

Anyone wishing to donate can call Brown at (616) 292-8767.
