A trip to Gaylord on Saturday for 14 wrestlers produced seven medals for the Red Hawk team.  Cedar advance three wrestlers to the championship rounds and found four in the consolations.

Starting with the 140 lb class, Senior Ric Rios (24-14) battled on the mat with Tristan Kang (33-8) from Escanaba. Throughout all three rounds, Rios countered Kang’s moves to earn 13 points but not quite enough to beat the Eskimo. Rios placed 4th overall.

In the 145 lb class, Sophomore Austin Wamser (37-7) faced Alex Cannon (36-12) from Petoskey in the championship round. Wamser wrestled strong, but fell to the Northman in the first round to take second place.

Senior Scott Vodry (42-4) took to the mat with nationally ranked Greenville wrestler, Jordan Thomas (42-1) to battle for first place, but placed second just behind his Yellow Jacket peer in the 152 lb category.

189 lb class wrestler, Senior Jeremy Stellema (41-7) placed 4th for the day. Stellema went three rounds against Jacob Kisro (23-9) of Petoskey. The end of the first round found the score 0-1 in favor of Petoskey. An escape in the second round by Stellema tied the score 1-1. An unusual stalling call by the referee in round three, gave an additional point to each wrestler once again tying the score 2-2. A takedown by Kisro at the buzzer brought the score 2-4 in favor of Petoskey.

Junior Nic Baird (42-3) pinned Manistee’s Alex Meyers (40-7) with 1:05 left in the second period. Baird took the 3rd place medal in the 103 lb class.

Battling in the 112 lb. consolation round was Senior Kirk Moore (18-5) and Casimer Srzynski (28-5) from Ludington. A tough match scored no points in the first round. An escape for Moore in the second round earned the first point of the bout, but Ludington pulled a reversal and edged out Moore who placed 4th for the day.

The final round of the day for Cedar was Freshman, Cody Oehme, (28-1) who placed second behind Greenville’s Luke Gilmore in the 119 lb class due to injury default early in the first round.

All seven Red Hawk wrestlers will advance to individual regionals held on Saturday, February 27 in Mount Pleasant.
