Margaret Bird

Margaret Esther Bird passed away January 17, 2010 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital.  Margaret was born July 10, 1918 to Wesley and Nettie Rau, was raised in Solon Township, graduated from Cedar Springs High School, and lived her adult life on the family farm on Shaner Avenue, Courtland Township.  Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Max L. Bird, her parents and her two brothers Darrell Rau and Steven Rau. She is survived by her three children, of whom she was so very proud, Michael (Roberta) of East Grand Rapids, Patricia of Northglen, Colorado, and Phillip (Nancy) of Huntsville, Alabama.  Also surviving are grandchildren Kevin (Karen) Bird of South Lyon and Jennifer (Brian) Sherer of Nashua, New Hampshire, and the source of much joy in her last years, her “three little girls” great-granddaughters Madison Sherer, Kiersten Bird, and Kallie Bird.  In addition to their busy life on their farm, Max and Margaret were active supporters of the Cedar Springs School System, and they were involved in their children’s successes from 4-H through graduations from Michigan State University.  They were able to retire early enough to have the time and opportunity to travel much of the United States, and to have the energy to follow their passion for dancing, especially the polka!  Margaret loved to cook and bake, loved to garden, loved her life.  Margaret’s children especially thank caring great-niece Linda Bird, and sister-in-law Delores Rau.  Thanks also to the staff at Meadowlark Village for their kind and always considerate care. The family received friends Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs, www.blisswitterspike.com where services will be held Thursday 11:30 am. Pastor Jeff Williams officiating. Interment Courtland Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Springs Education Foundation.
