Youth wrestlers earn medals, host tournament

While the Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling Club was preparing for its own tournament, four of its toughest wrestlers were in Indiana on January 14, 2012 at the Border Wars’ “War in the Windy City” National Wrestling Tournament.  Landon Demorest, Ryan Ringler, George Gonzales Jr. and Jordan Ringler all attended and placed at the national event.  Landon, Ryan and George all took Championships in their respective weight classes, earning them a custom 5” inch medal and a new singlet with the word “Champion” splashed across the front.  Jordan Rinlger did very well too, taking a well-earned second place finish.  Ryan also wrestled an age group up and earned himself a 3rd place finish in the 11-12 year old division.  They all returned home late Saturday night excited to wrestle at their own tournament, which was hosted the next day at the Cedar Springs High School.

On Sunday, January 15, Cedar Springs hosted the biggest regional MYWAY tournament of this season. With over 500 wrestlers in attendance, the high school was more than busting at the seams. The Cedar youth wrestlers also busted out at their own tournament, taking home a grand total of 18 medals!  Placers in the 4-6 age group were Chase Sarniak/3rd and Jonathan Lizardo/2nd.  In the 7/8 age group were Landon Demorest/1st, Tacho Gonzales/4th, Trevor Marsman/1st, Gage Ruiz/4th, Aiden Bouwens/2nd, and Maston Wood/4th.  In the 9/10 age group were Trenton Snoeyink/1st, Austin Emmorey/4th, Logan Hull/1st, Reese Gonzales/1st, Samuel Courturier/1st, and Ryan Ringler/1st.

In the 11/12 age group were Allexis Gonzales/2nd and George Gonzales Jr/3rd.  In the 13-15 age group were Jordan Ringler/1st and Tylor Carter/3rd.  Congrats to all of our local wrestlers.

Red Hawk wrestlers host fundraiser

The Red Hawk JV and Varsity Wrestlers exchanged their singlets for ties for their fundraising event on January 14. The teams went from wrestling to serving, when they hosted a black tie event at the American Legion Hall that included a four course meal and a fun night out. The event is a first this year in an attempt to fundraise in a new innovative way. The guests bought tickets that were sold by the wrestlers, and were in turn served by the wrestlers they bought the ticket from, and others. It was a great start this year, and next year the wrestling team is hoping the event will be even bigger and better, making this a new annual event.
The Red Hawk Wrestlers have been working hard this season, with an  overall team record of 13-8.  “We are a young team,” said head coach Scott Troost. “There are only 3 seniors on the team but most of the team consists of freshman. We are always improving.”
The Red Hawks continue to fight to clinch victories, and while not always getting that first, they are finishing usually in the top 3 at tournaments. A few of their places were in Fruitport 3rd, Tri-County 3rd, and Comstock where they took 3rd out of the 18 teams present.
The Redhawks leaders for the team with their own personal records are: Cody Oehme leading the team with his record of 25-5; Austim Wamser (Senior) who is 18-6 so far this season; Barron Lenardson 22-6; Jarred Vodry 17-9; and Dominick Chong with a 20-7 record. The Red Hawks will continue to work hard to build on the team and individual records.
The Red Hawks were scheduled to go up against West Catholic, Coopersville and Belding on Wednesday Jan. 25, and will be traveling to a tournament in St. Johns, who is ranked 3rd in the nation, on Saturday, January 28.

In the Pursuit of Champions

West Michigan Pursuit  wrestlers continue to surge forward, as evidenced by their performance at the Cedar Springs open tournament held this past Sunday. “We entered 15 wrestlers and 10 came home with medals. I am very excited at the progress our kids are making every week,” says Pursuit owner Dave Andrus. “This tournament was very tough with 539 wrestlers. Everyone battled and made me proud of what we do.”
While most wrestling clubs operate “on season” only, WMP is unique in that many of its wrestlers train twice weekly year round.  With a recent move to a larger facility just 5 miles south of their previous location, membership continues to grow, drawing young wrestlers from 7 area school districts, including Cedar Springs.  With the local tournament behind them, they are preparing to travel to Hart next weekend for their annual Hart Attackers Tournament.  At this point in the season, wrestlers will compete every Sunday until regional tournaments begin the weekend of March 10th.  MYWA Individual State Championships will be held at Kellogg Arena the weekend of March 23.

Wrestlers head to state finals

Congratulations to Red Hawk wrestlers Austin Wamser and Nic Baird, who will wrestle in the state finals next week.

Two Cedar Springs Red Hawk wrestlers, junior Austin Wamser and senior Nic Baird, are headed to the 2011 Individual State Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills March 3-5.

Both Wamser and Baird clinched fourth place wins at the Individual Regionals at Dewitt on February 19. Wamser lost his first match to Cody Kline from Clio 9-7, then came back to beat Sean Rusaw from Fenton 12-2 and Codie Naylor from Corunna 5-3 to take his place at state .

Baird had a battle of his own. Losing his first match to Nick Baker from DeWitt 10-4, Baird’s never give up attitude fueled his win against Austin Golden from Linden 9-5. With everything at stake, Baird’s next match was against Tyler Pastor from Fruitport. When Baird and Pastor last met, it didn’t go so well for Baird. Looking to be the victor, Baird took his attitude to the mat and proved to all that this was the match of the day! Baird, who was down in points and came close to getting pinned, returned and pinned Pastor with only 1.8 seconds left in the first period.

Congratulations to the entire Cedar Springs Red Hawks wrestling team for a great season and good luck to Baird and Wamser at the 2011 Individual State Wrestling Finals!

Two Cedar Springs wrestlers celebrate their 100th win!

The 2010-2011 season brought notable milestones for two Cedar Spring’s varsity wrestlers when senior Nic Baird and junior Austin Wamser celebrated their 100th wins.
Baird (119 lb), reached his 100th win in December and has continued to build a winning record into the new year.  Wins over Hastings, Coldwater and Flushing on Saturday added to his impressive season record.
Wamser (160 lb), achieved his 100th win on Saturday at the 8th Annual Carlos Martinez Classic held in St. Johns.  A low scoring first period found Hastings putting the first points on the board with a two-point takedown. The second period started with Wamser down but a reversal tied the score 2-2. Hastings countered with an escape but a takedown put Wamser in the lead 4-3 at the end of the period. Hastings executed a quick escape and takedown in the third round, which was soon countered by Wamser’s escape to tie the score 6-6.  Fierce battle by both wrestlers, down to the last second of the third period, found the final score 12-11 in favor of Wamser.   The team placed third overall in the day’s event.
On Saturday, February 5, the Red Hawks head into the OK Blue conference finals at Forest Hills Northern taking on Fruitport, Sparta and Reeths-Puffer. Team districts will take place on February 9 at Sparta and individual districts will be held on February 12 in Gaylord.
