WMP wrestlers travel to Middleville, Lakeview & Central Greights

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in different competitions.

WMP had four travel to the Central region for the Greights tournament in Jackson and all four placed. 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group and 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group finished 3rd. 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. Greights Champion is 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group. 

The West region was hosted by Thornapple Kellogg Middleville where four of our grapplers entered to compete. Both 67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group and 105 lb Isa Starr, 11/12 age group finished 4th. TK Champion is 52 lb Austin Rogers, 7/8 novice age group. 

The rest of the team traveled to the North region in Lakeview for the Monster Medals offered. Out of the 14 entered, 13 placed. 46 lb Emmett Russo, 4/6 age group finished 4th. 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group both finished 2nd. Lakeview Champions are 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 55 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 85 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group; 85 Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group; 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group; 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group; 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group and 58 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

“West Michigan Pursuit would like to also recognize Blake Peasley for his act of kindness to a fellow competitor,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “His finals match was against Teddy MacGregor of Chippewa Hills. After learning Teddy’s story, Blake donated his Monster Medal and bracket to him. Blake’s family has also been affected like many other families by cancer and like Teddy, the fight for a cure. On and off the mat, these kids have a heart of gold. I couldn’t be more proud,” added Andrus.

WMP wrestling results

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit had wrestlers competing at Badgerland Nationals, Mat Mayhem, Grand Haven and Grand Ledge. 

95 lb Blake Peasley entered the 5th/6th grade division for the Midwest Tour’s Badgerland Nationals in Wisconsin. He went 3-2 for the day, finishing in 4th. Peasley then entered the 95 lb wt class on Sunday at Grand Ledge and finished 2nd. 85 lb Alex Buskirk also entered the Grand Ledge tournament in the 11/12 age group and finished 2nd as well. 

WMP had four wrestlers travel to Kentucky for the NUWAY Nationals Duals team event. Quinten Cassiday wrestled on 10U Michigan MYWAY Blue for the 75 lb wt class. He went 6-1 for the weekend, earning MVP status. His team finished 6th. Brody Compau wrestled on the 8U Michigan MYWAY Blue for the 46 lb wt class. Compau won 3 matches and his team finished in 9th. Carter Giles wrestled on 10U Michigan MYWAY White for the 50 lb wt class. Giles won 3 matches. Josh Vasquez wrestled on 12U Michigan MYWAY Red for the 68 lb wt class. Vasquez went 5-2 for the weekend and his team finished 4th. 

The remainder of the team entered the Grand Haven tournament on Sunday. 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group finished in 4th. 72 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group and 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group finished in 3rd. 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group and 52 lb Austin Rogers, 7/8 Novice age group finished in 2nd. 

Champions of the day are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 80/85 lb Xavier Carpentier, 11/12 age group; 85/90 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group. 

“In preparation for very bright futures, I have been pushing these kids hard and I am very proud of their response,” said Heach Coach Dave Andrus. “They are competing with some of the best wrestlers in the Nation.”

WMP wrestler earns team MVP honor

WMP wrestler Josh Vasquez, 72 lbs, went 12-0 last weekend.

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Lansing for the Sparty School Team Duals, Individual and Team Duals and West Region’s Reeths Puffer tournament this last weekend. 

School-based duals were held on Friday. Kaleb Pautke and Harper Cheng wrestled with Byron Center. Pautke won two of his matches and Cheng won a match. Their team finished in 8th. Josh Vasquez wrestled with Grandville and he went 4-0, his team finished in 7th. 

WMP entered 11 wrestlers in the Saturday individual event. 49 lb Brody Compau, 8U finished in 4th. 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 9U Girls finished in 2nd and 72 lb Luke Egan, 12U finished in 2nd. Sparty Champions are 95 lb Blake Peasley, 12U and 72 lb Josh Vasquez, 12U. 

Team Duals were on Sunday and WMP had six wrestlers enter. 49 lb Brody Compau wrestled on the 8U Team MYWAY. He won 3 matches and his team finished 2nd. 72 lb Luke Egan, 85 lb Ayden McClurken and 95 lb Blake Peasley wrestled on the 12U Cyclone Team. Egan and Peasley won 4 matches each and McClurken won 2 matches. Their team finished 4th. 85 lb Tyler Parmeter wrestled on the 10U Cyclone Team. Parmeter won three matches and his team finished 6th. 72 lb Josh Vasquez wrestled on the 12U Michigan Revolution team. He went 5-0, earning Team MVP of the day. Special recognition to Josh for going 12-0 the entire weekend. His Team MVP status is very well deserved.

We also had nine wrestlers enter the Reeths Puffer tournament. 67/72 lb Jaxon Bowyer, 7/8 age group; 78 lb Logan Galinis, 9/10 age group; 61/64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 46 lb Emmett Russo, 4/6 age group all finished in 4th. 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 novice age group finished 3rd. Champions of the day are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group and 61/64 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

“I have been pushing these kids hard, preparing them for very bright futures. They are competing with some of the best wrestlers in the Nation and I am very proud of their response,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestles at Allendale, Howell, and Waverly

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Allendale, Howell and Waverly. 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group travelled to the northeast region in Howell and claimed his first Championship title of the season. 95 lb Blake Peasley travelled to the East Region in Waverly and claimed his second Championship title of the season. 

The remainder of the team entered the west region’s Allendale tournament. 46 lb Jeremiah Bowyer, 4/6 age group finished in 5th place. Finishing in 4th place was 64/67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group; 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 80/85 lb Alexander Russo, 11/12 Novice age group and 46 lb Emmett Russo, 4/6 age group. Finishing in 2nd place was 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group and 60 lb Kaleb Pautke, 9/10 age group. Allendale Champions are 85 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group, 72/75 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group; 90 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group; 85 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group; 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group and 58 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

“I am very pleased with the technical growth of my wrestlers. I recently split my sessions and the participation of the advanced working with our more novice has been fantastic. These kids are truly something special,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers to advance to state

West Michigan Pursuit entered 21 grapplers to wrestle at regionals last weekend, and 20 are advancing to the state finals in two weeks. Of the 20 qualifiers, 13 are Regional Champions. As a team, they are currently ranked as follows: 

#5 for Most Pins/Least Time with 27 pins in 42.11. 

#1 for most Tech Falls/Least Time with 8 tech falls in 22.16. 

#3 for most Pins/Tech Falls/Least Time with 35 in 64.27. 

#4 for Most total match points 413 points and #1 for Winning Percentage 58 wins/11 Losses 82% win ratio. 

Individual placements are as follows: 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group finished 5th Place. 95 lb Blake Hammer, 2004 age group; 100 lb Isa Starr, 2007 age group and 67 lb Kamden Witte, 2007 age group finished 3rdPlace. 55 lb Kaleb Pautke,7/8 age group; 58 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group and 59 lb Kellen Weckesser, 2008 age group finished 2nd Place. 

2018 Regional Champions are 67 lb Evan Andrews,2008 age group; 70 lb Xavier Carpentier, 2005 age group; 63 lb Quinten Cassiday, 2008 age group; 75 lb Harper Cheng, 2007 age group; 43 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 67 lb Luke Egan, 2007 age group; 64 lb Drew Moro, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Tyler Parmeter, 2008 age group; 85 Blake Peasley, 2007 age group; 138 lb Aaron Smith, HS; 80 lb Isaiah Sostenes, 2007 age group; 65 lb Josh Vasquez, 2006 age group and 49 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

We also want to recognize some grapplers who have practiced with us full time all season but do not currently wrestle under WMP: 

63 lb Hunter Eek, 2008 age group finished 3rd Place; and 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 2007 age group finished 2nd Place. 

2018 Regional Champions are 55 lb Tanner Cowles, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Ian Cook, 2006 age group and 75 lb Ayden McClurken, 2007 age group. 

WMP also recognizes the hard work of the following grapplers: Quinten Cassiday and Brody Compau, who earned their back to back Regional Championships; Tyler Parmeter, Josh Vasquez and Blake Werkema earned their 3rd consecutive Regional Championship; Ayden McClurken, Drew Moro and Blake Peasley earned their 4th consecutive Regional Championship; and Luke Egan earned his 5th consecutive Regional Championship. 

“These kids continue to exceed my expectations week after week,” said head coach Dave Andrus. “They have diligently pushed themselves and each other to get where they are right now. Going into the State Finals in a few weeks, I have the highest of confidence on their performance. A very special thank you to Bill, Aaron and all of my supportive parents. We are not coaching an elite group of All Stars. We are showing them the path it takes to realize their hard work come to fruition to be recognized as an All Star. This is what I strive for.”
