State finals and Nationals

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Kalamazoo for the 2019 State Finals the weekend of March 29. WMP entered 21 grapplers to compete and 17 earned All State recognition. 

43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group finished 7th. 90 lb Xavier Carpentier, age 13; 80 lb Harper Cheng, age 11; 81 lb Tyler Parmeter, age 10; 58 lb Dylan Russo, age 7; 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, age 10 and 55 lb Blake Werkema, age 8 all finished 5th. 80 lb Alex Buskirk, age 11 and 49 lb Brody Compau, age 8 both finished 3rd. 69 lb Evan Andrews, age 10; 54 lb Carter Giles, age 9; 75 lb Luke Egan, age 11; 85 lb Ayden McClurken, age 11 and 70 lb Josh Vasquez, age 12 finished 2nd. 

State Champions are 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, age 10; 100 lb Blake Peasley, age 11 and 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, age 8 in the All Girls division. WMP would also like to recognize Blake Peasley on his fourth State title and Tatianna Castillo’s back to back State title in the Girls Division. April is Autism Awareness month. It was a wonderful surprise to have my team show up to the State Finals all wearing singlets and gear that represent Autism Awareness. The cause is near and dear to my heart. They raised over $200 to donate to this amazing cause under my son’s name.

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Lansing for the 2019 NUWAY Nationals this past weekend. WMP entered 10 grapplers to compete and all 10 earned All American status. 51 lb Carter Giles, D3 and 65 lb Kellen Weckesser, D3 finished 7th. Giles ended his season with a record of 40-15 and Weckesser finished his season with a record of 39-11. 58 lb Dylan Russo, D2 finished 6th. Russo finished his season with a record of 40-29. 68 lb Evan Andrews, D3; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, D4 and 72 lb Josh Vasquez, D4 finished 4th. Andrews finished his season with a record of 44-12, Buskirk finished his season with a record of 45-15 and Vasquez finished his season with a record of 62-6. 71 lb Quinten Cassiday, D3 finished 3rd. Cassiday finished his season with a record of 62-7. 100 lb Blake Peasley, D4 finished 2nd. Peasley finished his season with a record of 62-12. National Champions are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 8U Girls division and 49 lb Brody Compau, D2. Castillo ended her season with a record of 63-15 and Compau finished his season with a record of 57-11. 

“A wrestling season is built on preparation, determination and heart,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “It is difficult to achieve personal success without the support of each wrestler’s family. Every wrestling family knows you give it your all. A season is not defined on wins and losses but rather watching your athletes move in a positive direction. For a coach, it is the greatest joy to have an athlete run off the mat and into your arms after achieving their goal,” he added.

WMP wrestlers to advance to state finals

This past weekend West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Northview for the 2019 MYWAY West Regional event. WMP entered 22 grapplers and 20 will be advancing to the State Finals in two weeks at the Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. Out of the 20 that will be advancing, 14 are Regional Champions. 

Final placements are as follows: 64 lb Desmond Smith, age 8 and 80 lb Alex Russo, age 11 finished 4th. 67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, age 8 and 80 lb Harper Cheng, age 11 finished 3rd. 81 lb Tyler Parmeter, age 10 and 90 lb Xavier Carpentier, age 13 finished 2nd. West Region Regional Champions are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, age 8; 49 lb Brody Compau, age 8; 58 lb Dylan Russo, age 7; 55 lb Blake Werkema, age 8; 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group; 69 lb Evan Andrews, age 10; 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, age 10; 54 lb Carter Giles, age 9; 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, age 10; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, age 11; 75 lb Luke Egan, age 11; 85 lb Ayden McClurken, age 11; 100 lb Blake Peasley, age 11 and 70 lb Josh Vasquez, age 12. 

WMP would also like to recognize the following individuals for their impressive accomplishments: Evan Andrews earned his back to back Regional Championship. Brody Compau, Quinten Cassiday and Carter Giles earned their 3rd consecutive Championship Title. Blake Werkema and Josh Vasquez earned their 4th consecutive Championship Title. Ayden McClurken and Blake Peasley earned their 5th consecutive Championship Title and Luke Egan earned his 6th consecutive Championship Title. 

“These kids continue to exceed my expectations week after week,” said head coach Dave Andrus. “They push themselves and each other to get where they are right now. Going into the State Finals in a few weeks, I have the highest of confidence on their performance. Very special thank you to Bill, Lucus and all of my supportive parents,” he added.

WMP at Belding, Battle Creek, Ithaca

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in three different competitions. 

The South West region hosted the Greights tournament in Lakeview Battle Creek. Six grapplers entered this competition. 46 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group was our only morning grappler and he finished 2nd. The other five entered the afternoon session and all claimed Championship Titles. Greights Champions are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group; 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group, 80 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group was the only grappler to travel to the North Region of Ithaca. Weckesser went undefeated and claimed a Championship Title.

The remainder of the team stayed in the West Region at Belding. WMP had fifteen enter to compete and eleven finished in the top four. 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 112 lb Isa Starr, 11/12 age group finished 4th. 67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group finished 2nd. Belding Champions are 75 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 90 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group, 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 55 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

Next weekend is Regionals and will be held at Northview High School for those looking to enjoy watching a great weekend of wrestling. 

“These kids are stepping up their training and are pushing each other at practice to secure their spot for an opportunity to compete at the State Finals.  I have the highest confidence in these kids to do so,” said Head Coach, Dave Andrus.

WMP at Huron, Tri County and Oxford

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in three different competitions. 

The East Region was hosted at Huron and attracted seven WMP grapplers. 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group finished 3rd. 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group and 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. Huron Champions are 85 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

The Northeast Region was hosted by Oxford where singlets were offered for first place. WMP had three grapplers enter. 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. Oxford Champions are 49 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group and 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group. 

The North region was hosted by Tri County. WMP had nine enter. 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group and 46 lb Emmett Russo, 4/6 age group both finished 3rd. Tri County Champions are 75 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group, 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 61 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group. 

“These kids are peaking at the right time. I am excited to see how they finish at regionals in a few weeks,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP at Hudsonville, team duals and St. Johns

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in different competitions.

WMP had three grapplers compete at the MYWA Team State at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. Alex Buskirk wrestled on the Lakeview team. He won two matches and his team finished 4th. Luke Egan and Tyler Parmeter wrestled on the Cedar Springs team. Egan went undefeated and Parmeter claimed three victories for the day. Their team finished 7th. 

One grappler traveled to the Central Region at St. Johns. 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age finished 2nd. 

The rest of the team stayed local to the West Region at Hudsonville, where team trophies as well as individual awards were offered. 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group finished 4th. 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 novice age group and 58 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. Hudsonville Champions are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 49 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group; 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group; 52 lb Austin Rogers 7/8 novice age group; 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group; 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group and Team West Michigan Pursuit. WMP brought home the team trophy with a total score of 226 points. 

WMP top scoring grapplers are as follows: Josh Vasquez 27, Blake Peasley 26.5, Austin Rogers 26.5, Harper Cheng 25, Brody Compau 23, Blake Werkema 22.5, Evan Andrews 21, Kooper Witte 20, Carter Giles 19.5 and Alex Russo 15. 

“It was a lot of fun this past weekend with the individual and format. Seeing our kids working together to reach a goal is great to see,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP at Metro Greights, Meijer State Games and more

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in different competitions. 

WMP had five travel to the Metro Region for the Greights tournament in Roseville. 55 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group and 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group both finished 2nd. Metro Greights Champions are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group and 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group. 

112 lb Isa Starr traveled to the West Region’s tournament hosted at Davenport. Starr finished 3rd in the 11/12 age group. 

WMP had five travel to Pennsylvania for Team Duals on Saturday and Individual events on Sunday. 75 lb Quinten Cassiday wrestled on MI Mayhem’s 10U Team. Cassiday went 4-1 for the day and his team finished 1st. 72 lb Luke Egan wrestled on Cyclones 12U Team. Egan won 2 matches for the day and his team finished 5th. 85 lb Ayden McClurken wrestled on Cyclones 12U Team. McClurken won a match and his team finished 5th. 80 lb Tyler Parmeter wrestled on TNT 10U Team. Parmeter won three matches and his team finished 2nd. 72 lb Josh Vasquez wrestled on MI Mayhem’s 12U Team. Vasquez went 4-1 for the day and his team finished 3rd. For the PENNWAY Individuals, Tyler Parmeter finished 5th in his division. Ayden McClurken finished 2nd and Champions of the day are Luke Egan and Josh Vasquez.

Harper Cheng and Kaleb Pautke also wrestled on their Byron Center school-based duals team on Saturday. Both claimed 3 victories each and their team finished 2nd. The rest of the team traveled to the South West region’s Go Earn It competition at Wings Stadium. 90 lb Xavier Carpentier, 11/12 age group and 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. 75 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group, 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group and 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group all finished 2nd. Valentine’s Day Brawl Champion is 49 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group. 

“These kids are exposed to some of the toughest competition in the nation,” remarked Head Coach Dave Andrus. “Their sportsmanship continues to impress me whether coming down from an incredible win or having to pick themselves back up from a tough loss.”

GVSU, Vicksburg, Chippewa Hills & Caledonia Duals

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out and had grapplers enter into several different competitions. 

80 lb Luke Egan and 88 lb Tyler Parmeter travelled to Caledonia to wrestle on Cedar Springs 6 Grade and Under Duals Team. Egan went 5-0 and Parmeter went 4-0 for the day. Cedar Springs took 1st in their Pool and finished 2nd overall.

WMP had four travel to the South West Region at Vicksburg for the Championship rings offered. All four claimed Championship titles and came home with their rings. Congratulations to 75 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

The North Greights tournament took place at Chippewa Hills and we had four enter to compete. 57 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group finished 3rd. 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. North Greights Champions are 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group and 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group. 

The West Region was held at GVSU and we had nine enter to compete. 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group finished 4th. 64/67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group and 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. GVSU Champions are 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group; 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group and 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group. 

“Wrestling and my team is my passion,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “This group of kids has earned a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. I am very thankful to my wrestlers and their parents for their support and allowing me to make an impact on their lives. Sharing my knowledge to those who wish to learn makes all of my efforts worth it.”

WMP wrestlers earn medals

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Charlotte, Clio and West Virginia this past weekend. 

Kellen Weckesser and Quinten Cassiday travelled to West Virginia to compete in the Winter Throne tournament. Weckesser entered the 10U, 62 lb division and finished 2nd. Cassiday entered the 10U, 75 lb division and went undefeated, claiming a Championship title. 

WMP had nine grapplers travel to Clio for the Northeast Regions’ Greight tournament. 75 lb Kamden Witte, 11/12 age group finished 3rd. 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group; 85 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 55 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished 2nd. Greights Champions are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 90 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

The rest of the team travelled to the Central Region in Charlotte. 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group finished 4th. 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. 90/95 lb Xavier Carpentier, 11/12 age group; 90 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group and 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group all finished 2nd. Charlotte Champions are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 80 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group and 75 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group. 

“These kids are proving to have success whether traveling nationally or locally. Each week, they continue to impress me with their wrestling and their sportsmanship,”  said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers earn all-state

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to Kalamazoo for the 2018 State Finals this past weekend. WMP entered 25 grapplers to compete and 16 earned All State Recognition. We also had 2 enter the All Girls division, Tatianna Castillo and Hannah Pienton. 52 lb Castillo earned her first State Title in the 7/8 age group and 139 lb Pienton finished 6th in the high school division. 

With over 280 teams competing, WMP is currently ranked as follows: #16 for Most Pins/Least Time with 28 pins in 53.21; #53 for most Tech Falls/Least Time with 2 tech falls in 8.09; #18 for most Pins/Tech Falls/Least Time with 30 in 61.30; #14 for Most total match points with 482 points; and #34 for Winning Percentage—73 wins/34 Losses, 69 percent win ratio.

Individual results are as follows: 63 lb Hunter Eek and 55 lb Kaleb Pautke, 7/8 age group finished in 8th. Pautke has a season record of 43-10. 49 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group finished in 7th. Werkema has a season record of 26-10. 75 lb Ian Cook and 59 lb Kellen Weckesser finished in 6th. Weckesser has a season record of 35-18. 70 lb Xavier Carpentier and 64 lb Aaiden Vasquez finished in 5th. Carpentier has a season record of 21-15 and Vasquez has a season record of 38-11. 63 lb Quinten Cassiday, 138 lb Aaron Smith and 65 lb Josh Vasquez finished 3rd. Cassiday has a season record of 52-11 and Vasquez has a season record of 48-9. 67 lb Luke Egan and 75 lb Tyler Parmeter are both a State Runner Up. Egan has a season record of 50-14 and Parmeter has a season record of 33-25. 2018 State Champions are 43 lb Brody Compau, 75 lb Ayden McClurken, 64 lb Drew Moro and 85 lb Blake Peasley. Compau has a season record of 28-11, McClurken has a season record of 41-1, Moro has a season record of 59-5 and Peasley has a season record of 50-8. 

WMP also recognizes Drew Moro and Blake Peasley on earning their 3rd State Title. MYWAY also recognized and awarded Quinten Cassiday, Luke Egan, Ayden McClurken and Blake Peasley a gift for placing in the top four at all of the Greights tournaments for their dedication to the sport.

West Michigan Pursuit entered 21 grapplers to wrestle at regionals last weekend, and 20 are advancing to the state finals in two weeks. Of the 20 qualifiers, 13 are Regional Champions. As a team, they are currently ranked as follows: 

#5 for Most Pins/Least Time with 27 pins in 42.11. 

#1 for most Tech Falls/Least Time with 8 tech falls in 22.16. 

#3 for most Pins/Tech Falls/Least Time with 35 in 64.27. 

#4 for Most total match points 413 points and #1 for Winning Percentage 58 wins/11 Losses 82% win ratio. 

Individual placements are as follows: 52 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group finished 5th Place. 95 lb Blake Hammer, 2004 age group; 100 lb Isa Starr, 2007 age group and 67 lb Kamden Witte, 2007 age group finished 3rdPlace. 55 lb Kaleb Pautke,7/8 age group; 58 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 7/8 age group and 59 lb Kellen Weckesser, 2008 age group finished 2nd Place. 

2018 Regional Champions are 67 lb Evan Andrews,2008 age group; 70 lb Xavier Carpentier, 2005 age group; 63 lb Quinten Cassiday, 2008 age group; 75 lb Harper Cheng, 2007 age group; 43 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 67 lb Luke Egan, 2007 age group; 64 lb Drew Moro, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Tyler Parmeter, 2008 age group; 85 Blake Peasley, 2007 age group; 138 lb Aaron Smith, HS; 80 lb Isaiah Sostenes, 2007 age group; 65 lb Josh Vasquez, 2006 age group and 49 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

We also want to recognize some grapplers who have practiced with us full time all season but do not currently wrestle under WMP: 

63 lb Hunter Eek, 2008 age group finished 3rd Place; and 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 2007 age group finished 2nd Place. 

2018 Regional Champions are 55 lb Tanner Cowles, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Ian Cook, 2006 age group and 75 lb Ayden McClurken, 2007 age group. 

WMP also recognizes the hard work of the following grapplers: Quinten Cassiday and Brody Compau, who earned their back to back Regional Championships; Tyler Parmeter, Josh Vasquez and Blake Werkema earned their 3rd consecutive Regional Championship; Ayden McClurken, Drew Moro and Blake Peasley earned their 4th consecutive Regional Championship; and Luke Egan earned his 5th consecutive Regional Championship.
