WMP results from TeamState Duals and Hudsonville

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Kalamazoo for school based Team State and the West Region’s tournament hosted by Hudsonville. WMP had six grapplers enter the school-based events. Kooper Witte wrestled for Greenville’s 10U 50 lb wt class. Witte went 5-0 for the day and his team finished 13th. Alex Buskirk wrestled for Lakeview’s 12U 84 lb wt class. Buskirk went 6-0 for the day and his team finished 9th. 90 lb Harper Cheng and 115 lb Korbin Oliver wrestled for Byron Center’s 15U. Cheng went 4-2 and Oliver went 3-2 for the day and their team finished 11th. 66 lb Carter Giles and 80 lb Kamden Witte wrestled for Greenville’s 15U. Giles went 4-1 and Witte claimed two victories, their team finished 4th. 

The rest of the team stayed close to home with Hudsonville offering individual and team awards. WMP entered 22 grapplers to compete and 20 placed in the top four. They had 16 make it to the Finals and 11 Championships were claimed. Out of 108 matches, WMP claimed 83 victories. As a team, WMP earned back-to-back team Championship Titles. West Michigan Pursuit finished with the top spot with 231 points. Team GRWA finished in 2nd with 230 points and Hamilton Hawkeye finished in 3rd with 158 points. 

Individual placements are as follows: 107 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group and 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group finished 4th. 77/72 lb JJ Petersen, 7/8 age group and 66 lb Tatianna Castillo, 9/10 age group finished 3rd. 75 lb Evan Andrews, 11/12 age group; 114 lb Xavier Carpentier, 13/15 age group; 60 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group; 100 lb Logan Goguen, 13/15 age group and 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group finished 2nd. Hudsonville Champions are 97 lb Declan Mead, 7/8 age group; 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 55 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group; 85 lb Quinten Cassiday, 11/12 age group; 54 lb Brody Compau, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 63 lb Landon Learn, 9/10 age group; 95 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group; 90 lb Tyler Parmeter, 11/12 age group; 80/85 lb Josh Vasquez, 13/15 age group and 60 lb Blake Werkema, 9/10 age group. 

“It was a lot of fun this past weekend with the individual and team format,” said head coach Dave Andrus. “Seeing our kids working together to earn their 2nd consecutive Team Championship Trophy was great to see.”

WMP results from Greights, Valentine’s Day Brawl and Pennway

This past weekend West Michigan Pursuit had kids traveling to Pennsylvania, Kalamazoo and Grandville for competition this past weekend. 

The PENNWAY Duals and Individual events were held in California, Pennsylvania at the University Convocation Center. WMP had seven grapplers enter. 86 lb Alex Buskirk wrestled for Michigan Mahem Blue, 12U. He won two matches and his team finished 1st. 78 lb Luke Egan and 82 lbTyler Parmeter wrestled for TNT, 12U. Egan went 4-1 and Parmeter won 2 matches.  Their team finished 4th. 54 lb Carter Giles, 74 lb Evan Andrews and 78 lb Quinten Cassiday wrestled for Michigan Mahem White, 12U. Giles and Cassiday both went 4-1 and Andrews won two matches. Their team finished 5th. 44 lb Kooper Witte wrestled for TNT 7U. Witte won three matches and his team finished 2nd. Quinten Cassiday also entered the individual event at Pennway and claimed the Championship Title in the 12U, 78 lb wt class! The West Region was hosted by Grandville and WMP entered four to compete. 66 lb Travis Pike, 9/10 age group finished 3rd and 63 lb Blake Werkema, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. 

The Southwest region hosted the Valentine’s Day Brawl at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.  WMP entered 17 grapplers to compete, placing 12 in the top four. 114 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group finished 4th. 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 90 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group and 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group all finished 3rd. 97 lb Declan Mead, 7/8 age group; 57 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group and 95 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group all finished 2nd. Valentine’s Day Brawl Champions are 55 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group; 54 lb Brody Compau, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 80 lb Josh Vasquez, 13/15 age group. 

WMP would like to recognize Luke Egan and Carter Giles for their travel. Both competed in Pennsylvania on Saturday, and they traveled through the night to get back to Michigan and compete in Kalamazoo on Sunday. 

“It is the dedication from the parents of my athletes and the drive they have themselves that help build the reputation of my program. These kids love to compete, and helping them obtain their goals is my passion,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP results from Bulldog Brawl and Meijer State Games

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit stayed local to Michigan competing in the North Region’s Bulldog Brawl hosted by Ferris State and the West Region’s Meijer State Games hosted by Davenport. 

WMP had 24 grapplers enter the Bulldog Brawl and three enter the Meijer State Games. Results from Bulldog Brawl are as follows: 107 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group; 90 lb Tyler Parmeter, 11/12 age group and 63 lb Travis Pike, 9/10 age group all finished 4th. 55 lb Jaxson Babcock, 7/8 age group; 46 lb Kooper Witte, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Evan Andrews, 11/12 age group and 60 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group finished 3rd. 97 lb Declan Mead, 7/8 age group; 77 lb JJ Petersen, 7/8 age group; 114 lb Xavier Carpentier, 13/15 age group; 90 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group and 60 lb Blake Werkema, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. 

Bulldog Brawl Champions are 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 52 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group; 85 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group; 54 lb Brody Compau, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 57 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group; 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 80 lb Josh Vasquez, 13/15 age group. 

Results from Meijer State Games are as follows: 100 lb Logan Goguen, 13/15 age group and 122 lb Korbin Oliver, 13/15 age group finished 3rd. 57/60 lb Jace Schut, 9/10 age group finished 2nd. 

Overall, WMP entered 27 grapplers to compete this weekend. 15 WMP wrestlers made their way into the finals, claiming 8 Championship Titles. 

“With the North Region offering singlets for 1st Place, this drew tough competition from all over the state. I am very happy with the number of my kids that battled their way into the Finals. These kids work extremely hard and it shows on the mat,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP wrestlers claim victories

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit had grapplers competing in several different competitions. 78 lb Quinten Cassiday, 5th/6th grade and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 7th/8th grade travelled to Monticello, Minnesota for the last National tournament of the Midwest Belt Tour Series. Both Quinten and Josh claimed the Championship Title along with their belt for placing in the top four, three out of the four competitions. 

The West Region was hosted by Caledonia. WMP had four grapplers enter. 107/114 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group finished 2nd. Caledonia Champions are 95 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 60 lb Jace Schut, 9/10 age group and 63 lb Blake Werkema, 9/10 age group. 

The Central Region hosted the Greights tournament at Holt. 63 lb Landon Learn, 9/10 age group was our sole grappler to enter. Learn finished 3rd. 

The North Region was hosted by Lakeview. WMP entered 23 grapplers to compete. 49 lb Emmett Russo, 5/6 age group and 107/114 lb Logan Goguen, 13/15 age group both finished 4th. 80 lb Kamden Witte, 11/12 age group finished 3rd. 55 lb Jaxson Babcock, 7/8 age group; 64 lb Declan Mead, 7/8 age group; 49 lb Kooper Witte, 7/8 age group and 66 lb Tatianna Castillo, 9/10 age group all finished 2nd. Lakeview Champions are 77 lb JJ Petersen, 7/8 age group, 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 52 lb Ethan VanDyke, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Evan Andrews, 11/12 age group; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group; 60 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group; 90 lb Tyler Parmeter, 11/12 age group; 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 63 lb Travis Pike, 9/10 age group. 

Kooper Witte and Carter Giles also wrestled on the school based duals for Greenville on Saturday. Witte and Giles both went 4-0 for the day. Their team finished 2nd in their pool and 3rd overall. 

WMP had 83 matches and claimed 67 victories this weekend. Out of 25 grapplers that entered, 23 finished in the top four, claiming 14 Championship Titles. “This group of kids are peaking at the right time. I am excited to see how they finish at Regionals in less than a month’s time,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP grapplers medal in four tournaments

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to four different regions this past weekend.

The West Region was held at Grand Valley University. WMP had six grapplers enter and five finished in the top four. 66 lb Travis Pike, 9/10 age group and 133/158 lb Isa Starr, 11/12 age group both finished 4th. 114 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group and 122 lb Korbin Oliver, 13/15 age group both finished 3rd. GVSU Champion is 57/60 lb Jace Schut, 9/10 age group. 

The Southwest Region was held at Vicksburg. WMP had seven enter, placing six in the top four. 49 lb Emmett Russo, 5/6 age group and 60 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group both finished third. 75/80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group went 5-1, finishing as a True 2nd. Vicksburg Champions are 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 85 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group and 54 lb Brody Compau, 9/10 age group. 

The Greights tournament was held by the Metro Region and hosted by Hazel Park. WMP entered four and three finished in the top four. 63 lb Tatianna Castillo, 9/10 age group took 3rd in the open division. With no competition entered in her weight class, she bumped to the 76 lb wt class and took 4th in the girls division. Greights Champion is 52 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group. 

The North Region was held at Chippewa Hills. WMP entered four and all four claimed Championships. Chippewa Hills Champions are 60 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 63 lb Blake Werkema, 9/10 age group. 

Overall WMP entered 21 grapplers to compete this weekend and finished with nine Champions. We had 76 matches and 51 of those ended in victory. 

“We had kids scattered this weekend between having kids entered in four different tournaments and some taking the time off to attend the Iowa vs. Michigan State college duals in Lansing. These kids continue to impress me with their skill sets. Even with limited coaching staff available this past weekend, WMP still claimed nine Championship titles. Congratulations West Michigan Pursuit, you truly are the Pursuit of Champions,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus.

WMP results from West Virginia, Mio, Shepherd and Lakewood

Brody Compau was WMP’s 54 lb champion at Lakewood.

West Michigan Pursuit traveled to West Virginia, Mio, Shepherd and Lakewood this past weekend. 

107 lb Blake Peasley wrestled for Michigan Mayhem at the 12U Winter Throne Duals in New Cumberland West Virginia on Saturday. Peasley went 5-0, earning MVP and his team took home the Championship Title. 

WMP had three enter the North Greights tournament in Shepherd on Sunday and all three placed in the top 4. 60 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group and 63 lb Landon Learn, 9/10 age group both finished 4th. 52 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group claimed the Greights Championship Title. 

85 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group travelled to the McGregor Athletic Center in Mio on Sunday and claimed the Championship Title. 

The West region was hosted by Lakewood and WMP entered 20, placing seventeen in the top 4. 66 lb Tatianna Castillo, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Kamden Witte, 11/12 age group and 69 lb Aaiden Vasquez, 9/10 age group all finished 4th. 80 lb Quinten Cassiday, 11/12 age group and 107 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group all finished 3rd. 55 lb Jaxson Babcock, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Evan Andrews, 11/12 age group; 107 lb Xavier Carpentier, 13/15 age group; 63 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group and 80/85 lb Josh Vasquez, 13/15 age group all finished 2nd. Lakewood Champions are 77/82 lb JJ Petersen, 7/8 age group; 64 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 49 lb Emmett Russo, 5/6 age group; 49 lb Kooper Witte, 7/8 age group, 95 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 54 lb Brody Compau, 9/10 age group and 105 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group. Lakewood also hosted a team tournament and WMP finished 3rd

“Overall, WMP had 90 matches over the weekend and 66 victories were claimed. We had 14 grapplers battle their way into the Finals, claiming 9 Championship Titles. WMP results from Sparta and NUWAY Nationals

Last weekend, West Michigan Pursuit had grapplers competing in National Duals in Kentucky and the West Region’s event hosted by Sparta. 

WMP had three grapplers travel to the Expo Center in Louisville, Kentucky. 95 lb Ayden McClurken and 107 lb Blake Peasely wrestled on MYWAY Blue, 12U Team. Both McClurken and Peasley went 5-2 for the weekend. Their team finished 2nd in their pool and 4th overall. 50 lb Brody Compau wrestled on MYWAY Blue, 10U Team. Compau went 5-2 for the weekend. His team finished 1st in their pool and 5th overall. 

The rest of the team stuck close to home with the anticipated storm coming in. WMP had 26 grapplers entered to compete at the Sparta tournament and 24 placed in the top 4. Out of 84 matches, WMP claimed 63 victories. 

Results are as follows: 85 lb Bryce Beam, 11/12 age group finished 4th. Finishing 3rd was 72/77 lb JJ Petersen, 7/8 age group; 49/52 lb Kooper Witte, 7/8 age group; 63 lb Brennan Dietz, 9/10 age group; 100 lb Logan Goguen, 13/15 age group; 107 lb Evan Mouch, 13/15 age group and 66 lb Travis Pike, 9/10 age group.

Runner Ups are 82/97 lb Declan Mead, 7/8 age group; 66 lb Tati Castillo, 9/10 age group; 90/95 lb Harper Cheng, 11/12 age group; 60 lb Jace Schut, 9/10 age group and 80 lb Kamden Witte, 11/12 age group. Champions of the day are 64/67 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group; 49 lb Emmett Russo, 5/6 age group; 55 lb Ethan VanDyke, 5/6 age group; 75 lb Evan Andrews, 11/12 age group; 107 lb Xavier Carpentier, 13/15 age group; 85 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 60 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group; 63 lb Landond Learn, 9/10 age group; 90/95 lb Tyler Parmeter, 11/12 age group; 80 lb Alex Russo, 11/12 age group; 57 lb Kassie Sapp, 9/10 age group and 80/85 lb Josh Vasquez, 13/15 age group.

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Kalamazoo for the 2019 State Finals the weekend of March 29. WMP entered 21 grapplers to compete and 17 earned All State recognition. 

43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group finished 7th. 90 lb Xavier Carpentier, age 13; 80 lb Harper Cheng, age 11; 81 lb Tyler Parmeter, age 10; 58 lb Dylan Russo, age 7; 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, age 10 and 55 lb Blake Werkema, age 8 all finished 5th. 80 lb Alex Buskirk, age 11 and 49 lb Brody Compau, age 8 both finished 3rd. 69 lb Evan Andrews, age 10; 54 lb Carter Giles, age 9; 75 lb Luke Egan, age 11; 85 lb Ayden McClurken, age 11 and 70 lb Josh Vasquez, age 12 finished 2nd. 

State Champions are 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, age 10; 100 lb Blake Peasley, age 11 and 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, age 8 in the All Girls division. WMP would also like to recognize Blake Peasley on his fourth State title and Tatianna Castillo’s back to back State title in the Girls Division. April is Autism Awareness month. It was a wonderful surprise to have my team show up to the State Finals all wearing singlets and gear that represent Autism Awareness. The cause is near and dear to my heart. They raised over $200 to donate to this amazing cause under my son’s name.

West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Lansing for the 2019 NUWAY Nationals this past weekend. WMP entered 10 grapplers to compete and all 10 earned All American status. 51 lb Carter Giles, D3 and 65 lb Kellen Weckesser, D3 finished 7th. Giles ended his season with a record of 40-15 and Weckesser finished his season with a record of 39-11. 58 lb Dylan Russo, D2 finished 6th. Russo finished his season with a record of 40-29. 68 lb Evan Andrews, D3; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, D4 and 72 lb Josh Vasquez, D4 finished 4th. Andrews finished his season with a record of 44-12, Buskirk finished his season with a record of 45-15 and Vasquez finished his season with a record of 62-6. 71 lb Quinten Cassiday, D3 finished 3rd. Cassiday finished his season with a record of 62-7. 100 lb Blake Peasley, D4 finished 2nd. Peasley finished his season with a record of 62-12. National Champions are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 8U Girls division and 49 lb Brody Compau, D2. Castillo ended her season with a record of 63-15 and Compau finished his season with a record of 57-11. 

“A wrestling season is built on preparation, determination and heart,” said Head Coach Dave Andrus. “It is difficult to achieve personal success without the support of each wrestler’s family. Every wrestling family knows you give it your all. A season is not defined on wins and losses but rather watching your athletes move in a positive direction. For a coach, it is the greatest joy to have an athlete run off the mat and into your arms after achieving their goal,” he added.

WMP wrestlers to advance to state finals

This past weekend West Michigan Pursuit travelled to Northview for the 2019 MYWAY West Regional event. WMP entered 22 grapplers and 20 will be advancing to the State Finals in two weeks at the Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. Out of the 20 that will be advancing, 14 are Regional Champions. 

Final placements are as follows: 64 lb Desmond Smith, age 8 and 80 lb Alex Russo, age 11 finished 4th. 67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, age 8 and 80 lb Harper Cheng, age 11 finished 3rd. 81 lb Tyler Parmeter, age 10 and 90 lb Xavier Carpentier, age 13 finished 2nd. West Region Regional Champions are 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, age 8; 49 lb Brody Compau, age 8; 58 lb Dylan Russo, age 7; 55 lb Blake Werkema, age 8; 43 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group; 69 lb Evan Andrews, age 10; 72 lb Quinten Cassiday, age 10; 54 lb Carter Giles, age 9; 66 lb Kellen Weckesser, age 10; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, age 11; 75 lb Luke Egan, age 11; 85 lb Ayden McClurken, age 11; 100 lb Blake Peasley, age 11 and 70 lb Josh Vasquez, age 12. 

WMP would also like to recognize the following individuals for their impressive accomplishments: Evan Andrews earned his back to back Regional Championship. Brody Compau, Quinten Cassiday and Carter Giles earned their 3rd consecutive Championship Title. Blake Werkema and Josh Vasquez earned their 4th consecutive Championship Title. Ayden McClurken and Blake Peasley earned their 5th consecutive Championship Title and Luke Egan earned his 6th consecutive Championship Title. 

“These kids continue to exceed my expectations week after week,” said head coach Dave Andrus. “They push themselves and each other to get where they are right now. Going into the State Finals in a few weeks, I have the highest of confidence on their performance. Very special thank you to Bill, Lucus and all of my supportive parents,” he added.

WMP at Belding, Battle Creek, Ithaca

This past weekend, West Michigan Pursuit spread out to compete in three different competitions. 

The South West region hosted the Greights tournament in Lakeview Battle Creek. Six grapplers entered this competition. 46 lb Kooper Witte, 4/6 age group was our only morning grappler and he finished 2nd. The other five entered the afternoon session and all claimed Championship Titles. Greights Champions are 69 lb Evan Andrews, 9/10 age group; 80 lb Alex Buskirk, 11/12 age group; 54 lb Carter Giles, 9/10 age group, 80 lb Tyler Parmeter, 9/10 age group and 75 lb Josh Vasquez, 11/12 age group. 

66 lb Kellen Weckesser, 9/10 age group was the only grappler to travel to the North Region of Ithaca. Weckesser went undefeated and claimed a Championship Title.

The remainder of the team stayed in the West Region at Belding. WMP had fifteen enter to compete and eleven finished in the top four. 58 lb Dylan Russo, 7/8 age group and 112 lb Isa Starr, 11/12 age group finished 4th. 67 lb Jaxen Bowyer, 7/8 age group finished 3rd. 64 lb Desmond Smith, 7/8 age group finished 2nd. Belding Champions are 75 lb Quinten Cassiday, 9/10 age group; 58 lb Tatianna Castillo, 7/8 age group; 52 lb Brody Compau, 7/8 age group; 75 lb Luke Egan, 11/12 age group; 90 lb Ayden McClurken, 11/12 age group, 95 lb Blake Peasley, 11/12 age group and 55 lb Blake Werkema, 7/8 age group. 

Next weekend is Regionals and will be held at Northview High School for those looking to enjoy watching a great weekend of wrestling. 

“These kids are stepping up their training and are pushing each other at practice to secure their spot for an opportunity to compete at the State Finals.  I have the highest confidence in these kids to do so,” said Head Coach, Dave Andrus.
