Weiler qualifies for state meet


The Lady Red Hawks Track team traveled to Houseman Field in Grand Rapids, on Friday, May 19, to compete in the 14-team MHSAA Regional track meet.  The team scored 31 points and placed seventh in the meet. Senior Katie Weiler was the loan Red Hawk to qualify for the MHSAA State Finals. Katie qualified for the fourth year in a row. Katie will compete at the State meet in the 1600 meter run and the 3200 meter run. She was regional champion in the 3200 meter run with a season best time of 11:06.22. Katie also ran a season best in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:08.8 to place second.

Junior Kayla Bohy placed 6th in the discus with a throw of 92’ 6”.  Her throw was 10 feet improvement on her best throw of the year. Sophomore Marissa Oakes placed sixth in the long jump with a jump of 15’ 6 ½”. Senior Jeanette Sukstas had her best throws of the year in the shot put and discus of 30’ 1” and 87”. Both earned Jeanette seventh places. The 3200-meter relay team of Caitlin McClurken, Ellie Ovokaitys, Allie Veltkamp and Christina Dean placed seventh with a time of 10:47.89.

The team next competes in the Pioneer Classic on Friday May 24 at Ferris State University and then in the Daily News All-Star meet in Greenville on Tuesday May 28.

JV Conference

The Lady Red Hawks Track team competed in the non-scoring OK Bronze JV Conference meet at Greenville on Tuesday May 14. With only four girls competing the team took 4 first places. Ellie Ovokaitys was a double winner. Ellie took 22 seconds off her best time in the 1600 meter run winning in a time of 5:51.9. Ellie also won the 800-meter run. Alison Hall won the long jump with her best jump of the year of 13’ 8 ¼”. Alison also was second in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the 2oo meter dash. Ali Colley won the shot put and placed third in the discus with a season best throw of 64’ 4”. Vana Havens also set season best times in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash.

Girls Track defeats Northview


 

 

The girls track team traveled to Forest Hills Eastern for a triple dual meet. The girls defeated Northview 102 to 34 but lost to both Forest Hills Eastern and Greenville. The team’s record is now even at 2 wins and 2 losses.

Placing first against Northview for the Red Hawks was Katie Weiler in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs. Maria Oakes had two individual firsts in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Abby VanDusen was also a double winner in the pole vault and long jump. Seniors Kaitlyn Twork and Jeanette Sukstas won both throws. Kaitlyn won the discus and Jeanette won the shot put. The team won all four relay events against Northview.

The team hosts the Red Hawk Invite Saturday, May 4, at Red Hawk Stadium. Field Events start at 9:00 with the Boys Pole vault and running events start at 11:00 with the 3200 Relay. Running finals for the other events will start at noon.

Also placing for the Red Hawks in the Northview meet was:

2nd place: Jeanette Sukstas, Discus; Marissa Oakes, Long Jump; Allyson Marvel 100 and 300 hurdles; Olivia Finch, 100 meter dash; Maddie Pekrul, 1600 and 3200 meter runs; Emily Shaft, 400 meter dash; Caitlin McClurken, 800 meter run; Maddie Burkwalt, 200 meter dash.

3rd  place: Kaitlyn Twork, Shot put; Briana Pierson, High Jump; Shayne Mann, 1600 and 3200 meter runs; Maddie Burkwalt, 100 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles; Christina Dean, 800 meter run.

Girls track splits meet; Weiler sets record

The Red Hawk Girls Varsity Track team opened the 2012 season at Greenville High School with a double dual meet against Greenville and Kenowa Hills. The Red Hawks defeated Kenowa Hills 96 to 41 and lost to Greenville 84 to 53. Freshman Kenzie Weiler set a school record in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:04.4.

Placing in first for the Red Hawks was:

• Jeanette Sukstas, shot put and discus

• Rieley Hondalus long jump and 400 meter dash

• Aly Hamilton 100 and 200 meter dashes

• Kenzie Weiler 1600 and 3200 meter runs

• Katei Weiler 800 meter run

• 400 Meter relay team of Marissa Oakes, Sayge Wight, Abby Vandusen, and Aly Hamilton

• 800 Meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Sayge Wight, Marissa Oakes, and Aly Hamilton

• 1600 meter relay team of Rieley Hondalus, Fenessa Cotten, Katie Weiler, and Sommer VanDyke

• 3200 meter relay team of Sommer VanDyke, Maddie Pekrul, Kenzie Weiler, and Katie Weiler.

Placing in second was Kait Twork, shot put and discus; Abby Vandusen, long jump; Mariah Alles, high jump and 300 meter hurdles; Marissa Oakes, 100 meter dash; Katie Weiler 1600 meter run; Maddie Pekrul 3200 meter run.

Placing third was Marissa Oakes, long jump; Abby Vandusen, pole vault; Mariah Alles, 100 meter hurdles; Sommer Vandyke, 1600 and 800 meter runs; and Emily Shaft, 400 meter dash.

Lady Red Hawks lose to Huskies


After two canceled meets due to the weather and three weeks since their team’s first meet, the Cedar Springs Red Hawk girls track team finally was able to get on the track to compete. The team opened the OK Blue season with a dual meet at Forest Hills Northern on Thursday, April 21. Despite many fine performances and an outstanding effort by all members of the team, the Lady Red Hawks lost by a close score of 72 to 65.
Sophomore Katie Weiler earned 4 first places in the meet. Katie won the 800, 1600, 3200, and was a member of the winning 3200-meter really team.  Senior
Amber Terhaar continued her dominance of the throwing events by winning the shot put and discus.  The team’s overall record are now 1 and 2.  They host the Belding Redskins at Red Hawk Stadium on Thursday April 28 for their first home meet of the year. Field events start at 4:00 and the running events start at 4:45.

Second Place: Jeanette Sukstas Shot Put and Discus; Aly Hamilton long jump; Sommer VanDyke 1600 and 800 meter run; Briana Pierson High Jump; Abby VanDusen 100 meter hurdles; Fenessa Cotton 300 meter hurdles.
Third Place: Fenessa Cotten 100 meter hurdles; Jessica Titus 3200 meter run; Rieley Hondalus High Jump; Abby VanDusen Pole Vault;Allie Veltkamp 400 meter dash; Aly Hamilton 200 meter dash.
