Solon Township shows off town hall

Solon Township held an open house last Saturday, July 27 to show off the new township hall to residents. Throngs of visitors were treated to a hotdog lunch and other free refreshments, as well as a tour of the facility. The Solon Township Fire Department also had an engine there for kids to tour.

The township approved the building of the 6,000 square-foot hall with community room in the fall of 2011. The building has 4,000 square feet of offices, a 2,000 square-foot community room, in floor boiler heat, 2×6 exterior sidewalls, about four inches of spray foam insulation, a brick exterior, steel roof, LED lighting which operates automatically, some heated sidewalks, plenty of handicap parking, and a security system with cameras that can be viewed remotely.

Supervisor Bob Ellick told the Post in June that the total cost of the building would be between $860,000 and $880,000 when completed.

Solon Township should consult architect for site design


Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to inform the residents of Solon Township that the Township Board is pushing to vote at the monthly meeting next Tuesday evening to finalize the plans for the new township hall/community building.  This action would pave the way to start construction this coming spring.
My concerns are these:  The original site plan did not include the future use of the entire parcel, only the immediate site of the new township hall.  The board has stated in the past that there are plans to use the property in the future as a site for a new fire station, a park with picnic pavilion, baseball and soccer fields and other amenities. These future plans were not taken into consideration when it came to the site location of the new hall.
Secondly, the board picked a group of Solon residents to come up with the building design and did not consult an architect.
I understand the that the Board would like to begin this project as soon as possible, but I think that they should proceed in a more prudent way, and make sure that if they are going to spend nearly a three quarters of a million dollars of taxpayer money ($200,000 borrowed), that the design of the entire parcel should be considered, and that an architect be consulted to make sure that the new hall and future buildings are designed in a way that is cohesive, the designs are inspired, and the finished product is something that the residents of Solon Township are truly proud of.

Solon delays pole barn removal

About 20 people attended the Solon Township board meeting last Tuesday, July 12, to voice their opinion on why a horse barn on township property should not be pulled down to make room for a new township hall.

At the meeting, the board decided to table action for authorization of the sale and removal of the barn. They approved preliminary plans last fall for the construction of a 6,000 square-foot building with community room, at a cost of about $750,000.

Solon Township Supervisor Bob Ellick said that they had not yet seen the site plan, though were told it was complete, and would not act until they could review it. He also feels that if they wait a couple of years, they would be in a good financial position to pay for it without financing any of it. “Our revenue sharing went up substantially, but these are still tough economic times,” he said. “Why rush it?” He noted they would still need to pay for heat and electricity for the current building, which also houses the fire department.

Currently the pole barn is being used to host a farm, craft, and flea market every Saturday during the summer, at no charge to vendors. The originally thought they might be able to convert it into offices or a new fire department, but an engineer told them it would be cost prohibitive to do that.

“We could probably sell it through an auction,” said Ellick.

Solon bought the 19-acre horse farm at 15185 Algoma two years ago in a tax foreclosure sale for $28,378.
