The Phantom’s Tollbooth

Michigan has had its share of long hot humid days that can turn even the most energetic child into bored and listless creatures. The Cedar Springs Community Players has just the antidote (or anecdotal) to recharge their young minds in presentation of “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster.

This children’s musical shares the story of Milo, a bored youth who unexpected receives a magic tollbooth in his living room with a map to the Kingdom of Wisdom and “the Lands Beyond.” Having nothing better to do, Milo drives through the tollbooth with his small toy car and immediately enters the land of Expectations. Milo is soon joined by a watchdog named Tock, who will help him save Princess Rhythm and Princess Reason, who are locked away in the castle in the sky.

The Phantom Tollbooth introduces the audience to the war between Dictionapolis (words) and Digitopolis (math) and how confusing the Kingdom of Wisdom becomes without rhythm or reason.

Showtimes are Friday, August 16 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m.; Sunday August 18 at 3:00 p.m.  Tickets are $12 for adults; $5 for children under 18 years of age.  All performances at the Kent Theatre, 8 N. Main, Cedar Springs.
