Lady Red Hawk Volleyball


The Lady Red Hawks Varsity Volleyball team had their share of ups and downs in competition last week. 

On Tuesday, October 17, they fell to Forest Hills Northern 0-3.

Then, on Thursday, October 19, Cedar Springs Varsity Volleyball honored senior Sydney Plummer and her parents, when they hosted Forest Hills Central in an exciting final home match (18-25; 23-25; 26-24 and 11-25) with the Rangers. 

The ladies completed the week traveling to Sparta for the Varsity Invitational on Saturday, October 21, where they fell to the host Spartans 25-19, 14-25 and 18-25. The Red Hawks came back to beat Hastings 25-21, 25-19 and 25-14, before losing in single elimination Gold bracket play to Comstock Park 20-25 and 23-25. 

Senior outside hitter Sydney Plummer led the day with 33 kills, 29 digs, 4 aces and 21 service points. Libero Brighton Miller tallied 25 digs, 5 aces and 2 kills. Setter Maddie Outwin contributed 54 assists, 7 aces and 29 service points while Middle Hitter Grace Pavelka had 5 blocks and 12 kills. Lauren Kostus added 11 kills and 16 digs. Ashley Wise added 3 blocks and Arriana Rau put up 2 blocks.

The Lady Red Hawks return to action on Thursday evening, October 26, at 6 p.m. when they travel to Northview for their final conference match of the season.

Cedar Springs Athletic Boosters – Athletes of the Month


Plummer, Schut, and French, named Cedar Springs Athletic Boosters Student Athletes for November.

Freshman Sydney Plummer was named the November Student Athlete of the Month for Volleyball. Sydney is completing her first season on varsity with the Red hawks. Sydney currently leads her team in kills with 89 and is second in both serve receiving and digs at 191 and 106 respectively. Sydney, really respects her teammates always having her back, and knows that she can rely on them whenever needed!

Coach Reynolds comments “As a freshman playing on the varsity girls’ volleyball team, Sydney’s work ethic was second to none. Although only a freshman, she led by example in every practice and game. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Sydney’s game is the outstanding sportsmanship she displayed throughout the entire season. Sydney represents Red Hawk athletics by consistently displaying teamwork, responsibility, and work ethic.”

Sydney is the daughter of Julie and Chip Plummer.

Julie Schut

Senior Julie Schut was named the November Student Athlete of the month for Girls Golf.  Julie is a 4 year varsity team member and has worked very hard to improve her game and scoring every year. Julie is an honor student with a 3.9 GPA. Julie also plays French horn in the band, and participates on mission trips with her church youth group. Julie had a great year with her Golf teammates on this years “Dream Team”.

Coach London comments “Julie is one of my toughest competitors! She never seems to get frustrated or dismayed.”

Drew French

Drew French

Sophomore Drew French was named the November Student Athlete of the Month for Tennis.  Drew finished an incredibly successful season winning 12 matches, and finished second in conference. Drew has a 3.55 GPA. Drew also participates in Ski Club, USTA,  and volunteers his time as a youth tennis teacher .Drew is very excited about the future of CSHS Tennis!

Coach Unsworth states “Drew is very committed to taking every opportunity to improve his game by participating in tennis drills and activities outside of regular team functions.  He is not afraid to ask for coaching advice and one on one practice time from his coach to better his play!

Drew is the son of Trisha and Warren French
