The Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling (CSYW) program continues to make a name for itself throughout the region and the state. This past Sunday a team of 10U Red Hawks traveled to Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo along with 70 other teams from across the state for the MyWAY Team State Championships, while another group of Red Hawks traveled to Hudsonville for some MyWAY West Region action. In Hudsonville seven Red Hawks found their way onto the podium, and as a team Cedar finished with 12 pins and 236 total match points. Coach Streeter was impressed with the outcome at state stating, “We are a very consistent team across the board. Our wrestlers are very solid at every weight, which creates matchup problems with most teams out there.”

On Sunday in Kalamazoo, the Wings Event Center played host to best youth wrestling teams from across the state and the Red Hawks again proved themselves among the best. In initial pool matches the Red Hawks went 2-1 while defeating Edwardsburg 52-25, Mason 52-24, and eventually dropped a close match to Brighton 40-42. These results proved enough to move the Red Hawks into the winner’s bracket to determine the top eight in state. Cedar got off on the right foot with a huge win over high school conference rival Lowell 42-37, solidifying their spot in the top 4. The next match was lopsided as the Red Hawks fell to eventual state champion South Lyon by the score of 3-77. The next match to determine 3rd and 4th place was another loss for the Red Hawks as they fell to Hartland 27-49. Cedar finished the day as the 4th best team in the state behind South Lyon, Dundee, and Hartland. They also finished the day in 5th place in pins with 27, 7th in team points with 216, and 10th in match points with 215. The Red Hawks also finished with five wrestlers earning all-state honors. Brycen Alber, Ben Streeter, Dayton Reynolds, Ales Hanes, and Zach Vu all won four or more matches to earn all-state honors. This is the second year in a row that the Red Hawks have placed in the top eight.

In Hudsonville, the Red Hawks were also successful as seven grapplers made the podium. In the 2009-2010 age group 57lb bracket, Elijah Elam claimed 2nd place while Triton Spicer took 3rd in his first tournament in the Open group. Also in the 2009-2010 age group, NaHaar Nicholls took 3rd in the combined bracket of 57/60lbs. In the 2007-2008 age group, Deegan Pike earned a hard fought 2nd place finish in the 80lb bracket, while Rory Schoenborn wrestled his way to a 3rd place finish in the 105lb bracket. Cedar had two wrestlers medal in the High School division with Landon Demorest earning 1st place in the combined weight class of 98/106lbs and David Erxleben also earning 1st place in the 138lb bracket.

This week the Red Hawks continue to gear up for Regionals by traveling to Central Montcalm for some MyWAY North Region action.

Six Red Hawk wrestlers headed to state finals

These six Red Hawk Varsity wrestlers are headed to the State Wrestling Championships at Ford Field March 2-3. Pictured L to R: Jacob Galinis, Lucus Pienton, Ryan Ringler Anthony Brew, Trevor Marsman, and Aaron Smith.

The Varsity Wrestling Program matched school history on Saturday by sending six individuals to the State Championships at Ford Field on March 2-3, 2018. Trevor Marsman (103), Aaron Smith (135), Jacob Galinis (140), Anthony Brew (145), Lucus Pienton (152) and Ryan Ringler (171) have earned the privilege of wrestling for the title of State Champion.

According to Varsity Coach Nick Emery, the only other time that the Red Hawks sent this many wrestlers to the state finals was in 1992.

Ringler is a two time Regional Champion and two-time returning all-stater. With a 51-1 record and #1 ranking on migrappler.com he will not be satisfied with anything less than a state championship.

Pienton enters the tournament at 45-7 on the year. A two time qualifier and a third place finish last season makes him a top contender that no one will overlook.

Jacob Galinis finally makes his first state tournament appearance and will finish his carreer as a Red Hawk with two Conference Championships and over 100 wins. Galinis is dangerous on his feet and could catch anyone at anytime.

Aaron Smith struts into Ford Field with confidence after a late season collapse kept him out in 2017. Smith loves his mother and is primed to make her proud by bringing home some hardware in 2018.

Trevor Marsman became only the fifth freshman in school history to step into limelight. At 103 lbs Marsman brings a sweetshot and mental toughness that will be hard to knockout.

Anthony Brew made his way through in exciting fashion with a dramatic last second comeback victory over his Allendale opponent in the blood round. Brew looks to follow in family footsteps with a solid showing next weekend.

This will mark the first time Ford Field has host the MHSAA Wrestling State Finals. Action starts at noon on Friday March 2 with the semifials at 730 pm and concluding with the finals at 3 pm on Saturday. Good Luck Red Hawks!

Months of hard work and dedication to one of the toughest sports known to man has paid off for Red Hawk youth wrestlers. From March 28 to March 30, over 2,500 wrestlers, ages 4 to 19, competed at the MYWAY State Championships held at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, MI. Cedar Springs Youth Wrestling Club sent a grand total of 17 state qualifiers to compete at the finals. Of those 17 wrestlers, 12 placed in the top 6, further qualifying them to compete at Nationals. Another accomplishment, not held by any other club in the area, is that Cedar Springs crowned a total of four 2014 State Champions this year!

Landon Demorest took on Mason Willis from Jr Marauders in the championship round. Demorest, who had a career record of 1 win and 2 losses against Willis, defeated Willis with a score of 3-2, making him the 2014 State Champion in the 47lb 9/10 division.

Ryan Ringler went undefeated, 4 pins and one decision, on a chart of 30 wrestlers.  Ringler, with a second round pin against runner-up Devin Trevino from Oxford, was crowned State Champion at 158lb in the 11/12 division.

Sisters, Reese and Allexis Gonzales both took State Champion in the first MYWAY Girls State Tournament.  Reese, who weighed in at 92lbs, earned her State Championship title with first round pins against all of her opponents in the 12 and under Heavy Weight division. Allexis, a seventh grader, took State Champion with one pin and two decisions in the 14 and under 122/130 combined weight division, taking championship over 8th grader, Brittney Ratliff from Onsted.

Pistachio Gonzales battled his way back on a chart of 26 wrestlers after suffering a second round loss to state runner-up, Da’Quavon White from Pontiac Huskies. He worked back to take third at 58lb in the 5/6 division!

Tommy Stevens, who wrestled at 58lb in the 7/8 division also worked his back on a 33 person chart. Suffering only one loss, Stevens took third after a 45 second pin against Oxford wrestler, Auggie Anderson.

Cora Gonzales, who competed at 52lb in the Girls 8 and under division, took a very impressive third place finish.  This was her first year wrestling and she plans to continue.

Rounding off the third place finishers, was high schooler, Jordan Ringler. After his initial loss in the second round, Jordan won his next five matches, three pins and two decisions, to take third place against Michael Gibbs from Waterford.

Zoe Gonzales took fourth in the Girls State 12 and under 76lb division.

Veronica Tapia took fifth in the Girls State 8 and under 44lb division.

On a 29 person chart at 63lb in the 9/10 division, Trevor Marsman wrestled his way to a sixth place finish with a total of four wins and two losses.

Aiden Bouwens, who went 4-2 on a 20 person chart, also finished sixth place at 100lb in the 9/10 division.

The Cedar Springs Youth wrestlers did very well during the 2014 season and will continue to excel against some of the toughest wrestlers here in Michigan and the nation because they ARE the toughest. They work hard and are determined to be champions.
