HAROLD L. POTTER


Harold L. Potter age 82 of Cedar Springs, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at his home. Harold was born June 2, 1938 in Cedar Springs, MI the son of Merritt and Beulah (Sneathen) Potter. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-60. He grew up on a dairy farm and had been a leader with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Red Flannel Rod & Gun Club where he taught hunter safety classes. Surviving are his wife, Helen whom he married on August 5, 1961; children, Harold “Les” (Denise) Potter Jr, Eileen (Randy) Driesenga, Emmett (Sonila) Potter, Elizabeth (Jim) Johnson; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Donovan (Jane) Potter, Daniel (Alice) Potter; sister, Elsie (Bob) Sly; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carl Potter. The family greeted friends Tuesday, December 15 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The service was held Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at Camp Lake Baptist Church 12150 N. Division, Sparta. Pastor Dennis Tyson officiating. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Lake Baptist Church.

Jewell Skirmish at Rod and Gun Club


All are invited to attend the “American Civil War Association” Jewell Skirmish on May 4-5 at the Red Flannel Rod and Gun Club, 7463 18 Mile Rd, Cedar Springs.

The event is named in remembrance of the Cedar Springs Jewell branch of the Grand Army of the Republic. This is not a reenactment, but rather a live fire competition with teams representing both Union and Confederate units using Civil War weapons. It is a kid/family-friendly event. Concessions will be provided by the Cedar Springs Cub Scout pack #3222. Admission is free.

Events are as follows:

Saturday, May 4

9:00 a.m. – Repeater match: Four events, three-person teams, 50 yards, 90 seconds.

10:45 a.m. – Smooth bore musket match: Four events, three-person teams, 25 yards, three minutes.

12:00 –  Lunch. Please support our Cub Scout pack.

1:15 p.m. – Carbine match: Five events, four-person teams, 50 yards, five minutes, two relays.

3:30 p.m. – Revolver match: four events, 3-4 person teams, 15 yards, 90 seconds, one or two-handed hold allowed, two relays.

5:00 p.m. – Mortar match: One event, 144 yards, seven shots, 30 minutes.

Saturday, May 5

9:30 a.m. – Opening ceremony

9:45 a.m. – Rifled musket match: five events, six-person teams, 50 yards, five minutes, two relays.

Summer Gospel Music Blowout

Aug. 5: This benefit to support 2nd Chance School will be held on Saturday, August 5th from 3 to 9 pm at 2nd Chance School, 810 – 17 Mile Rd., Cedar Springs. Music starts at 3 pm and will feature a new group each hour with Old Time Gospel Singers, Wayne Jarvie, Stroll Over Heaven, Northwoods Brothers, Traditional Country and Gospel Singers and North Country Band. MCC hosts its annual Chicago trip

Mar. 25: Montcalm Community College offers a March 25th bus trip to Chicago. Registration for MCC students is $24.20, which includes a $2.20 service fee, and it is $45.30 for non-students, which includes a $3.30 service fee. The ticket covers the cost of transportation, and participants must pay for their food and for their entry fees to attractions. Participants have time to visit one or two attractions during the trip. Available attractions include the Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science & Industry and Shedd Aquarium. The bus leaves MCC’s Sidney campus at 6:45 a.m., picks up passengers at the Greenville Wal-Mart parking lot at 7:15 a.m. and returns to MCC at 10:30 p.m. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/chicago-trip-tickets-28891469162. Cedar Springs Museum’s Summer Car Show

July 30: Be sure to join the fun at the Cedar Springs Summer Car Show in Morley Park on Saturday, July 30 from 8:00am-2:00pm. Free to all visitors and only $10.00 to register a car. A grilled hotdog lunch will be served “free” to the public from 11:00am to 1:00pm. We will have Pat Patin as DJ. Trophies will be given out at 1:00pm to “Best of Show” and the “Top 19” favorites. The F.F.A. students will sell a light breakfast at 8:00a.m. The museum uses this car show to help bring programs to our community and especially to allow us to host family programs without charge. #29

Aug. 2: The Sand Lake Police Department will present S.H.A.R.P. Sexual Harassment, Assault and Rape Prevention for Women on Tuesday, August 2nd at 6 pm. Hosts Needed for Chinese Students

July 19: Looking to go to China, but can’t afford it? We’ll bring China to you. Network 153 and Pine Ridge Bible Camp are hosting 73 Chinese students from Lu He International High School in Beijing July 19 thru August 8. They’re traveling to Grand Rapids to be immersed in English, while attending Pine Ridge Bible Camp August 1-6. We’re looking for host families who would open up their hearts and homes. Michigan Blood Drive

July 19: Hot dogs are back! Michigan Blood Drive on July 19th at the Cedar Springs United Methodist Church from 12:30 until 7:00 pm in the Church gymnasium. Summer is a particularly hard time for the blood supply so the need is greater. To thank you, the ladies from the Cedar Springs Women’s Club will grill a hot dog for anyone attempting to donate. Lakeview School Alumni Banquet

Sept. 11: The Lakeview School Alumni (this includes any former Lakeview School student from  2016 and earlier) and retired teachers are invited to attend the Annual Alumni Banquet to be held at Lakeview High School on Sunday, September 11th.  The cost is $15 per person with open house at 11 am and dinner at 1 pm. Bus Trip to Lansing

Oct. 4: On Tuesday, October 4th at 12 pm Franklin Graham’s Decision America is coming to Michigan’s Capital. I am hoping to find 40 people willing to commit $25 each to hire a bus to Lansing’s Capital where the event will take place. America is at a critical crossroad in its history and I believe that only through prayer can we turn people’s hearts and minds back to God. In prayer we are neither Republican or Democrat, of one denomination or another. We are believers who are willing to set everything aside to humble ourselves before God and ask Him to heal America. Good Friday Walk and Remember 

Mar. 25: Walk to each of the Sand Lake Village Churches and listen to the thoughts of characters that experienced the crucifixion first hand. Friday, March 25th from noon to 1:30 pm. Our walk begins at Resurrection Lutheran Church (just south of town on Northland Dr.), with stops at the Full Gospel Church, Downtown Pavilion, Mary Queen of Apostles, and the United Methodist Church. Transportation will be provided back to the Lutheran Church. Children and families are encouraged to join us. #10-12p

Mar. 26: An Easter Egg-Stravaganza, a celebration for children will be held on Saturday, March 26th from 1 to 2:30 pm at the Solon Center Wesleyan Church. Help Promote Literacy

Apr. 14: The Literacy Center of West Michigan has scheduled and information session on Thursday April 14th, for prospective volunteer tutors. This session is held at 6 pm and lasts one hour. It allows persons interested in becoming volunteer tutors to find out more about the Center and its literacy programs. At the end of the session there will be an opportunity to sign up for tutor training. By training people to be tutors, the Center can offer one-on-one reading help to adults asking for assistance in reading or English as a Second Language (ESL). CS Rotary Club Cow Plop

May 7: The Cedar Springs Rotary Club is hosting their annual Cow Plop on Saturday, May 7th from 9 am to 12 pm, next to White Creek Lumber, 13861 White Creek. Tickets are $5.00 each. Whitetails fundraising event


Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Cedar Springs Banquet on Saturday, February 5, at the Red Flannel Rod & Gun Club, 7463 18 Mile Road, Cedar Springs. This special event will feature a buffet dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.
The social hour begins at 5pm with dinner at 6:30pm. Tickets are $35 each, $20 for a spouse, or $25 for juniors 15 & under. Ticket order deadline is February 1, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
