The Red Hawk varsity baseball team improved to 2-0 with a 10-2 victory over Grant on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks were fueled by a great collaborative pitching effort. Peyton Newman threw four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, walking two and striking out six. Nathan Male added two innings of middle relief, striking out two. Nathan Draper came in and closed out the seventh inning to seal the victory.

At the plate, Thomas Reed again started off the game with a line drive shot up the middle. Junior Connor Ellison also added a pair of hits, as did Sophomore Bryce Marvel. The boys hit the ball well and were able to take advantage of a few mistakes made by Grant defensively.

The results of the games vs Lowell will run next week.

Cedar Springs JV Baseball

Last week’s doubleheader against the Newago Lions added two wins to the Cedar Springs JV baseball teams’ record after a loss to Kent City in the opening game of the season two weeks ago. The team’s pitching has given up only two walks so far this season, which is less than a walk per game. Sophomore Peyton Newman has pitched 9 innings over the first two weeks and has yet to surrender an earned run.

“Our pitching gives us a chance in every game by throwing strikes and making the other team earn it,” said Coach Tyson Hoffman.

Dylan Cudney, a sophomore, leads the team so far this season in RBIs with 7 for the books. The team’s bats were swinging both games with a 16-3 win the first game, and a 9-1 win the second game.

Next week’s battle will be home against the Lowell Red Arrows in another doubleheader Tuesday April 11.
