Morales wins state championship in bowling

Boys team finishes 14th

This is the second year in a row that junior Omani Morales made it to the girls individual state bowling tournament. Last year she didn’t make it out of the qualifying rounds, but this year she made it count. Out of 60 bowlers vying for a chance to compete, Morales seeded in 10th place, with the top 16 advancing to the state final competition last Saturday, March 2.

Morales first took on the number 7 seed, senior Shayleen Half, of Adrian, in her first match play two-game series, defeating her 432 pins to 393. She then took on sophomore Carly Snyder, of Middleville Thornapple-Kellogg, and won the two-game series 418-401.

In the semi-finals, she played freshman Karli VanDuinen of Muskegon Reeths-Puffer and beat her 388 pins to 318. In the final matchup, Morales bowled against senior Lindsey Juhl, of Escanaba, and won the two-game series 416-328 to claim the first ever Division 2 girls state bowling championship for Cedar Springs.

Senior Jonah Drake competed at the boys individual state finals tournament. He placed 50th at state.

The boys bowling team also competed at the state finals and finished in 14th place in Division 2.

Red Hawk bowling results

There has been some bad weather lately, but the Red Hawk bowlers are trying to not let it keep them from the bowling alley.

On January 26, Cedar Springs girls bowlers were able to attend Rockford’s invite due to a cancelation and took second place, losing to Rockford. Senior Sarah Galloway placed second in individuals with a two-game total of 405. Junior Omani Morales placed third in individuals with a two-game total of 388.

On February 4, both boys and girls teams played in a conference match against Ottawa Hills at Cedar Springs, and both boys and girls won.

On February 5, the teams played a conference match against Northview at Northview. The boys lost a tough match and the girls won. 

On Saturday, February 9, Cedar Springs attended the Mona Shores Invite. The boys made it to the play off round but were eliminated in the first round. The girls placed third, losing to Jenison.

Senior Dane Conely placed fourth in individuals with a three-game total of 625. Junior Omani Morales placed second with a three-game total of 651 .

On Monday, February 11, the teams hosted a conference match against Greenville. Both the boys and girls teams won.

Bowlers dominate in December

The boys and girls Red Hawk bowling teams dominated the competition at two matches in late December.

On December 19, they had a non-conference match against Allendale at Rockford Lanes. The boys won 23 to 7, and the girls won 22 to 8.

On December 26, they dominated at the Park Center Lanes Christmas baker tournament. Both boys and girls took home the first place trophy. The girls also receive a first place trophy for entering the roll off in first place where they remained all day. 

On January 5, they attended the Jenison invitational at Hudsonville Lanes. The boys finished in fifth place, and the girls finished in second place, losing by only seven pins. Junior Omani Morales placed third with a two game total of 375, and senior Sarah Galloway placed fifth with a two game total of 356.

Red Hawk Bowling results

On December 12, Cedar Springs had a conference match against Forest Hills Central at Forest Hills Central.  The Boys won 28.5-1.5. The girls won 23-7, with junior Omani Morales bowling her high school high of 267, and setting a new school record for high score in girls bowling.

On December 15, Cedar Springs hosted a tournament at Westgate and 17 schools attended. The boys finished 5th, with freshman Cody Marshall bowling his new high school high of 212. The girls finished 8th. 

Junior Omani Morales placed 6th in individuals with a 2 game total of 390. Senior Dane Conely placed 10th in individuals with a 2 game total of 424.

On December 17, Cedar Springs hosted a conference match against Northview. The boys lost 7-23. The girls won 23-7, with senior Morgan Nauta bowling her High school high of  119. 

Last week freshman Kayla Walters bowled her high school high of 118 and freshman Audrey Waite bowled her high school high of 117 against Lowell..

State bowling results

The girls bowling team wrapped up a great season at state on Friday, March 2, where they placed 17th out of 18 teams. They had placed second at regionals, and won their conference. 

The Red Hawks also sent two individual bowlers to state. Sophomore Omani Morales, the top girls bowler in the region, was eliminated in the first round of individual competition, as was senior Josh Hamilton, who had finished fourth at regionals.

Cedar Springs competed in the Wyoming invitational on Saturday, December 2. 

The boys team took 2nd place. The girls team was eliminated in the first round, losing to Rockford by only 2 pins. 

Omani Morales made the top 10 girl bowlers with a two-game score of 349.

Red bowlers take second in conference


Cedar springs hosted the end of the season conference tournament on February 17. The boys and girls both finished 2nd in conference.

The top boy bowlers of the tournament were senior Dugan Conely in 8th place, and senior Trevor Ruark in 9th. The top girls were sophomore Sarah Galloway in 4th, and freshman Omani Morales and senior Breanna Fiekema tied for 6th.
