William “Bill” Smith


SMITH (Cedar Springs) Mr. William “Bill” Smith, age 85, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012. He served his country in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Stembel. Bill was a gentleman who enjoyed fishing, especially for Walleye. He also enjoyed making custom cabinets. For 42 years he was employed with McInerney Spring & Wire. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris. Bill is survived by his children, Gregory Smith, Shawn and Margret Smith; grandchildren, Christie Jo and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Brooklyn, and Austin; brothers and sisters, Margaret (Robert) Jenkins, Alice (Howard) Perrins, Robert and Joyce Smith, Carl and Marty Smith; nieces and nephews. The service for Mr. Smith was held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Pederson Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Howard officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard with interment in Blythefield Memory Gardens. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider First Baptist Church of Cedar Springs, 233 S. Main St., Cedar Springs, MI 49319. Relatives and friends met with the family at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Cedric (Ced) K. Weaver


Dec. 8, 1935 – Sept. 27, 2012


Cedric (Ced) K. Weaver, age 76, of Vestaburg, Michigan, passed away Sept. 27, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda and a son, Carl. He is survived by his grandchildren, Leigh, Naomi, Brandi, Steven and Marshall; his sisters; Lily Fisher and Audrey Earhart, both of Cedar Springs; and a sister-in-law, Kristine Marsh of Rockford; also, many nieces and nephews. As per his wishes, no service will be held.

Beverly Jean Earnest

Beverly Jean Earnest, 63 of Rockford, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at her home. Beverly was born October 15, 1948 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Christian and Dorothy (Carter) Bentley. She was a graduate of Big Rapids High School. Surviving are her children, William (Vanessa) Hess of Grand Rapids, Darrel Hess of Baldwin, Warren (Barbie) Drayton of Big Rapids,  Betty Myszak of Lexington, Kentucky;  sisters, Juanita (Michael) Crooks of Morley, Lorinda (Richard) Lytle of Sears, Roberta (Phillips) Sprague of Sheridan, Leah Finney of Rockford, Laura Stahle of Cedar Springs; brothers, Richard (Ruth) Bentley of Baldwin, Alan (Bunny) Bean of Hopewell, Virginia; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Sharlene Bentley and Marjorie Winston; brothers, William and James Bentley. Services were held Saturday, June 23 at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Rev. Frank Parker officiating.

Bonnie Heyboer

Bonnie Lynn Heyboer, age 64, went to be home with her Lord, on June 2, 2012. Bonnie is preceded in death by her granddaughter Kimberly Flanagan and her father, Franklin P. Heyboer. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Wendy Schreiber and Ed Robinson, Jody and Michael Flanagan, along with her grandchildren Denell, Jeremy and Kristen Schreiber, Jacob Hayman and Brittany, Shane Flanagan. Great grandchildren McKayla, Adrian, Alexis, William, Erica, along with her mother Mildred Heyboer and her siblings, Nancy Herbert, Sharon and Curt Loosenort, Ruth Myler and Terry and Cheryl Heyboer, and several additional relatives and close friends. The family has decided to have her Celebration of Life on Sunday June 10th from 4 – 7 pm at White Creek Country Estates Clubhouse, 15851 White Creek, NE Cedar Springs, Michigan 49319.

Toby Springfield Jr

Toby Springfield Jr age 50 of Sand Lake passed away unexpectedly on May 22 at his residence.  He was born  March 16, 1962 in Lakeview the son of Toby and Marilyn (Beemer) Springfield.  Surviving are his mother Marilyn Beemer of Sand Lake, Daughter Heather (Eddy) Scram of Howard City and his grandsons Brayden and Koltyn; Sisters Suella of Portland Oregon  and Danielle (Rodney) Miller of Cedar Springs; brother Todd (Tammy) Springfield of Sand Lake and Kristy (Joslin) Beemer of Sand Lake and a special friend Bernita Ringler  and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.  During his working years he worked as a Truck driver for sixteen years at Aetna Supply.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved taking his grandsons and nieces and nephews with him.  Toby had a great sense of humor and always put a smile on your face.  Funeral  services will take place on Friday at 11:00 a.m.  at The Springs Church (135 N. Grant in Cedar Springs)  with Pastor Jennings Johnson  officiating with burial in the Reynolds Cemetery. Gordon Rector

Gordon Wayne Rector, of Zephyrhills, Florida, was born May 29, 1927, in Rockford, Michigan, and passed away February 5, 2012 in Hospice House, Dade City, Florida, surrounded by family. He had three sisters and one brother who preceded him in death. He married Marjorie June Ritchie September 25, 1947, in Cedar Springs. Together they raised four children, Nancy (Scott) Martin, Scott (Jo) Rector, Tom (Paula) Rector, and Sandy (Robert) Rieckman, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Gordon and Margie were married 64 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cedar Springs. He retired from Essroc Cement Company in 1991 after 28 years. His large family and many friends will miss him. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Pastor Mary Ivanov officiating. Jerry Huntoon

Mr. Jerry “Jess” Huntoon, age 69, of Kent City, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012. He was a 1960 graduate of Sand Lake High School and often said that he learned great work ethics from his mom.  After his graduation he enlisted in the US Air Force and bought a 1960 Chevy which became very familiar to the “local John Arms”.  After the service he worked as an Iron worker and became a Project Manager for Ironworkers Union #340. Jess was Superintendent of Construction for major sports arenas all over the country. He and his brothers were known for their excellent workmanship. Jess enjoyed fishing, hunting with his brother and especially liked boating with his family on the Croton/Hardy Muskegon River. He was also a member of the Glenn Hill Post #287 American Legion in Cedar Springs. Jess enjoyed life and was the “Rock of Gibraltar” for his family and friends. He was dearly loved by his family and is survived by his loving wife, Melody; his children, Janet and Dan, Annette (David), Terry (Jerry) Kelly, Jerry, Jr., Jerry Dale, John, Jessica and Adam, and Tyson; 14 grandchildren with the much anticipated arrival of one more; 9 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Larry and Karen, Max and Loretta, Joyce and Harold, Jane and Jerry, and Carolyn and Frank; nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Condrad and her family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Winifred Huntoon, his granddaughter, Stephenie, his grandson, Raymond, his brother, Fred, and his best friend, Jerry Magoon. The service for Jerry was held on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Pederson Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Military Honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard with interment in Sand Lake Cemetery. Relatives and friends met at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Emma J. Gebhardt

Mrs. Emma J. (Goller) Gebhardt, age 80, of Cedar Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 29, 2012. Emma was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Leo J. and Addie (Phelps) Goller. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished each and every one of them. Emma has touched so many lives by being a caring, giving, and loving individual. Right to the very end she had a sense of humor and tried to stay in control of the situation. Preceding her in death was her beloved husband of 57 years, Robert, brothers, Oscar and Richard Goller, sisters-in-law, Hilda Davis, Janie Gebhardt, brother-in-law, Melvin Davis, and great-granddaughter, Cora Veronica Wydock. Emma will be greatly missed by her loving children, Connie (Corky) Teer of Cedar Springs, Robert (Jean) Gebhardt of Amble, Samuel (Karen) Gebhardt of Cedar Springs, and Marie (Kevin) Norton of Southington, CT; her grandchildren, Carrie Teer, Courtney (Dave) Wydock, Kelby (JaNae) Teer, Austin Gebhardt, Blaine Gebhardt, Jacob, Jordan and Paige Gebhardt, Emily, Matthew and Audrey Norton; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Teer, Connor and Caden Wydock, and Weston and Warren Gebhardt; brother, John (Peggy) Goller, sisters-in-law, Betty Goller and Mary (Goller) Kilts; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Raymond Gebhardt, Albert (Letha) Gebhardt, Harold (Lynn) Green; and many nieces and nephews; and a close friend of the family, Robert Grice. Emma was active in the family business of Gebhardt Plumbing & Heating and enjoyed working alongside her son at Cedar Springs Mill and Supply. She proudly carried with her a life full of accomplishments. The service for Mrs. Gebhardt will be Friday, May 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 180 Northland Dr., Sand Lake, with Pastor Lee Zabrocki officiating. Interment in Courtland Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Emma to the American Lung Association or Resurrection Lutheran Church of Sand Lake. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Pederson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Thomas W. Smith

Mr. Thomas W. Smith, age 66, of Baldwin and formerly of Cedar Springs, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born in Traverse City and raised in Rockford, MI. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leota “Pat” Shears. Tom worked for Gust Construction until retirement in 2007. He was a loving, devoted husband of 48 years to Marcia (Palmer) Smith. They enjoyed doing many things together such as traveling on their Honda Goldwing all over the U.S., boating & snowmobiling all of which included their beloved Sheltie dog, Tapanga. In 2005 they purchased property up in Baldwin and this became the family home/campground known as the “Eagle Nest”. Tom was also the father of two daughters who recall their Dad’s steadfast commitment to his family and unconditional love. He is survived by his wife Marcia; children, Yvonne & Marshall Olson, Dawn Smith Cramer & her fiancé, Bernie Johnson; grandchildren, Terry II & Cassandra Cramer, Michael Cramer, Holly & Eric Almy, Shonna & Bronson Hayden, Christine & Jason York, Charles & Christen Olson, Daniel Olson & Michael Olson, and 8 great-grandchildren; 5 siblings, Sharon & Fred Shatz, Verna & Gene Ashley, Sandy & Derald Rhineberger, Gayle & George Hawley, Bill & Susie LaFollette. Tyler James Helton

Tyler James Helton, age 20, of Sand Lake, passed away very unexpectedly on Sunday, April 22, 2012, from injuries following a car accident. He was a 2010 graduate of Tri-County High School where he played basketball (point guard) and baseball (right field and first base). He really enjoyed his senior year. Tyler accepted Christ as his Savior at church camp at the age of 8. Three months ago he was baptized at Keystone Church in Grand Rapids. He liked dirt bikes and fast cars especially his ’99 Camaro T-top and then his Pontiac Grand Am GT. Tyler spent time with his nieces and nephews and liked to play with them and take them for rides. Tyler enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Just recently he joined the US Marines and was looking forward to reporting to Boot Camp in California. Tyler is survived by his parents, Marty and Marcia (Rosenberger) Helton; brothers and sisters, Stacie and Traviss Tompkins, Matthew Helton and Marcie Thompson, Katie and Jed Gitchel, Heidi Helton; nieces and nephews with one more anticipated; his grandparents, Betty Rosenberger, Marlene and Gene Ledford; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Leighton Rosenberger and Starlin Helton. The service for Tyler will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Solon Center Wesleyan Church (19 Mile and Algoma) with Rev.
